How to transfer your data without assistace from your host

How to transfer your accounts with out assistance of your host.

- login to cPanel
- click backups
- click 'Home Directory' under Partial Backups
- choose a location on your computer to save the file
- select any/all databases - save those to your computer
- select any/all email filters - save those to your computer
- select any/all email forwards - save those to your computer
- once complete
- login to cPanel on new host
- click backups
- under Partial Backups
- where 'Restore a Home Directory Backup'
- browse for downloaded home directory
- press upload
- where 'Restore a MySQL Database'
- browse for downloaded databases (ea. must be uploaded individually)
- press upload
- where 'Restore an Email Forwarders/Filters Backup'
- browse for downloaded e-mail files (ea. must be uploaded individually)

 

This is useful information, but web hosting companies also need to tell their customers like “backup is your responsibility”. So they will start taking care of their website more promptly.

 

What happens is that there was a time when everything was done for the client so that got used to the level of service. As prices eroded to near nothing many of those included services also disappeared.

 

While cPanel offers an easy to use backup feature many hosting clients can still stumble when it comes to backing up databases and assorted e-mail functions. Most of the top providers still offer free migration assistance when moving from cPanel to cPanel. Many top hosts also still offer daily backups as part as their plans but users often mistake this added service as a reason to not take backups. Despite providers offering backups it does not mean that you should not also have your own copies. Disasters can happen and data can be lost so the best practice is to always maintain a set of your own backup copies.
