Do money commands respect?

    What do you say friends?
I mean it seems people around you try to avoid you if you are broke. You are not in a circle anymore. They treat as if you don't even exist.
So do money really command respect?

Not in my eyes. If a person is a jerk I don't care how much money he/she has they won't get my respect.

Also, you shouldn't worry about being or not being in someone else's circle. Those things don't last anyway.

In my eyes having money or not having money does not make the person. If someone criticizes you for being broke and de-friends you for it they were not meant to be in your life in the first place. Ive been in places in my life where i have had money and also been broke and have had friends in the same positions and we have never treated each other any different as people have ups and downs in their life's. I have noticed the people that dont really matter in my life treat people differently due to money situations and those people were the first to become un-friend'ed by me as they dont really matter in the first place and have no place in my life...

For me, if someone has earned his/her wealth (not inherited it or lucked into it), I respect their business/financial acumen. That does not mean that I respect them as a person, overall. In fact, I recall one very wealthy man that I worked for many years ago. He had a booming business and hundreds of employees. As a member of his senior management team, I had some access into his personal life and it was a mess. He was divorced, his kids disliked or were scared of him. His grandchildren barely knew him and were also afraid of him. I don't believe that he had any real friends, either. I respected his business abilities but pitied him for being a complete failure as a human being.

Thank you guys for the reply.
I do genuinely believe it's being human that earns you respect.
But when I see the richer getting saluted at the door, and poor oh boy are treated as if they are some kind of parasites. It makes me wonder though.

Richer people tend to get better service, more sycophants, etc., because they are targets of these individuals. Could be a doorman hoping for a big tip or a hanger-on looking for money or a job, etc. Richer people have more goodies to give out and the people for whom that is important will attempt to ingratiate themselves with the person. Hey, if Sumner Redstone or Warren Buffett called and said they wanted to see me right away about a business deal, the salesman in me would pop right up and I would be there stroking their egos, etc., and trying to close the deal.

But that does not necessarily equate to real respect. And the smarter rich people that I have observed over the years fully understand this and actually get turned off by such behavior.

Now, I need to get back to work so that some day I can be rich and have that problem. ;)

While money does help, it certainly does not trump other arenas like the type of person one is, their character, morals, and contribution to the greater good!

    Hi Sagafakir,

    Very good question.

As indicated by jrbiz, above, "... But that does not necessarily equate
to real respect. And the smarter rich people that I have observed over
the years fully understand this and actually get turned off by such behavior."

People who are really, really, really rich do not necessarily care for anyone
to know that they are rich. Unless, of course, they are a real jerk.

    Please pardon my language.

I have known of multimillionaires living next door, and are the nicest
and the politest of people. One would never know that they come from
another breed of the economic stratum.

And real millionaires know when some people are trying to play to
another tune, in order to get something from them. They are not
    fools, mark you.

It is quite unfortunate that the society in which we live feel that that
it has to compartmentalize people based on what economic strata
    they seem to fall.

If anything this ce4ntury has taught me, is that wealth could take
wings and disappear at a moments' notice.

So the good book (the Bible) admonishes everyone to always
do good with what you have because there will come that day
when a "rich" man might just need the help of a "poor" man.

Certainly, nothing to laugh about. But how about that? Therefore,
to do otherwise is silly, and very nearsighted, indeed.

Thanks for that question, Sagafakir. It made me think.

    Thanks.

Only if you have a good attitude, humility on its own commands respect ,if you have money to spend,it complements it

    Hi Dele, :)

Well said: "Only if you have a good attitude,
humility on its own commands respect , if you
have money to spend, it complements it."

    Could not have agreed more.

And I think that a part of why some rich people
do not bother 'showing off' their wealth is that in
today's economic arena, money seem to have
wings. It takes off when you least expect it to.

    Thanks, Dele. :)

If a person is a scumbag - he is scumbag and nobody respects him.
If a person is a rich scumbag - he is still a scumbag and those who want to proove that they respect him are another scumbags. Sometimes money can change personality and talking about this I should say that not only good people may become bad but sometimes, more rarely, people may become better in one way or another.

We have a saying here in my home country that to truly find out how much one is respected in his life is to see how much people attended his funeral.

Well, i guess i will never know how respected i am as i will have no funeral. I dont believe in rotting in the ground and will be cremated with no viewing as i would rather have my friends stay home and party in remembrance of me than sit in a funeral home and cry like they really cared. And as a broke fool i know who my friends are anyway.
