While this is pretty heartwarming and awesome, I can't help but think this is complete crap and just a massive PR stunt. If a little girl writes to a company, the person writing back would come down to the child's intellect level, I'd like to hope, and generally not tend to use big words, things would be explained more and so on. This just seems a little over the top and a little too scripted.

Great PR for Google nevertheless. :)

I agree. Quite obvious that this is just for publicity.

From the letter from Google, it is not clear to me if they are simply letting the guy take a week of his own vacation off or whether they are giving him an extra week of vacation beyond what he could take already. I assume that it is the latter, but it is not explicitly stated.

    Dear Katie,

What the hell is this? You know, you could have sent an email. Deciphering your ridiculous crayon writing is just a big waste of my important time. Be grateful he has a job and you don't have to go back to the orphanage. In answer to your question, NO.

p.s. If we ever find out your father forged your cutsey little letter, he'll be terminated immediately!

    Love,
    Google

I think this is joke or something else
If that's true story, then I will doubt on Katie's father ability and/or his own managing skill. Come on, Not able to get a week holiday in a year????

Although I find it hard to believe this story, it makes me wonder why an organization the size of Google would do something like this merely for publicity? I mean they're VIRTUALLY ruling the web at the moment, if I may say so. Would they really need to pull some sort of stunt just to get some publicity? I don't think so, but you never know!

It was just my opinion. Same with, why do big companies like Coca-Cola or McDonald's or whoever still advertize in spite of their popularity and huge sales? I think it also applies with Google. Though they rule the web (or the world), they still need to do something for people to remember them and/or create an image that they would like people to see them as.

I don't know. If you believe it's real, I will respect your discernment :)

That, I guess, is 'brand hammering' which every giant does. It's quite different from attempting some stunt merely for publicity. Whatever the story with that little girl's letter to Google about her dad's leave is, it sounds to me to be more of a publicity stunt than brand hammering and I for one suppose Google doesn't need it really for any reason.
Anyway, I haven't said I believe it fully or not - I'm merely skeptical about either side. But I respect your view.

Brand hammering or publicity, I think their goal here is to make people think that they care for their employees. I think they do, they've got awesome headquarters, right? :D

I have been to Google's headquarters within the past year. I was pitching a service to their marketing folks for a UK company that I was involved with at the time. The funniest part of the meeting was the absolute embarrassment that the marketing folks had when they could not get their video conferencing and projection technology working the conference room. They kept saying how "this is Google and we are supposed to be able to work this stuff." We eventually settled for everyone huddling around a small laptop trying the see the presentation. Hilarious.
