The end of Year is near..

Daughter is on her first "date." She turned 19 yesterday.
Had a couple of close calls that never worked out.
New kid of the week asked her to a movie.
Met his parents, who went with them along with the boy's older sisters.

 

Sounds a bit overprotective. If she was 13-15 I'd probably understand the concern but at 19, I think, the girl should have the freedom to enjoy going on a date without anyone watching over her shoulder.

 

You know, I tend to agree, though I have to say that kids these days seem to be maturing a lot slower than when I was a kid. My daughter and her friends are in their early twenties and I often find them acting socially like 13-year-olds. I don't mean this in a necessarily negative way, but just an observation that the age of maturity seems to be changing. I hear similar stories from other parents with kids at this age. The fact the OP's daughter is going on her first date at age 19 is an example of this "slowing" of the maturation process.

I do have a question for the OP: you have a daughter aged 19, but list your own age as 20 in your profile? Sounds like you were a very precocious infant?

 

Maybe he's trying to put himself in his daughter's shoes.

 

Seriously though, I think the parents' mindset is a more decisive factor here. Even if going out on a date at 19 is socially acceptable or a trend that has evolved in that particular culture or place, some parents wouldn't regard it so. It depends mostly on the background the parents themselves come from.
Anyway, just my view.
