    I don't get him smoking five cigarettes simultaneously, however. Makes a very expensive habit even more expensive, of course, and he does not seem like someone with money to burn...

    He probably lives near the city's trash pile and digs those things out from the trash. Or good Samaritans help him out. I am sure he can't just walk over to a local store to buy those things.

    Yes, the buying part of the equation likely does not apply to him. Of course, this fellow is clearly dealing with mental illness and rationality obviously does not play a major role in his life. It would be more efficient and make his nicotine fix last longer if he smoked one at a time. By burning five at a time, most of the nicotine is going up in smoke. But, he certainly has bigger issues to deal with than that.
