What dedicated server do i need?

    Hello,
I am looking for a hosting company that you would recommend that can handle my site. Also please let me know how powerful of a server would i need.

Last month's stats for my site:

    540,000 visitors
    6,400,000 impressions
It's hitting about 1100GB of bandwidth per month

    Right now i have:

    Pentium 4 3.0GHZ Linux
    Ram: 2GB
Hard Drive: Seagate 320GB 16MB Cache
    Bandwidth: 2500GB

I'm paying $155/month. I can't find a better deal anywhere but my service kind of sucks. Support is useless and server is down a lot and sometimes its very slow. I looked at GoDaddy but they're alot more expensive. Any suggestions?

take a look at liquidweb.com -- they have awesome dedicated servers for great prices.

you should go with a dual processor machine if you can.

You might consider getting two servers as well. One for the file server/media files and the other as a front-end webserver so it can handle all the processing and the other server can handle all the bandwidth.

    Take a look at dediwebhost.com or systeminplace.com
I have used them both and have gotten great deals and great support when needed. They are both self managed.

I recommend staying away from layeredtech. I had service with them and I was thoroughly unhappy with how they treated me.

I could not agree with you more. I just got rid of them. They are the most terrible company I have ever been with or dealt with.

That is EXTREMELY cheap. I would go over to http://www.webhostingtalk.com and check out their dedicated server specials. Good luck.

One thing the OP did not mention is if he uses Cpanel or not? Also what is his skill level in administering Linix? Softlayer is a managed solution and costs a bit more. LT is an unmanaged provider and costs a little less[even though they are the McDonalds of customer service as people here agree]. And one more thing, how much of that 2 gigs do you use, could you make do with 1 gig or perhaps you are really RAM starved and need 4 gigs but don't realize it?

You really need to identify the bottlenecks too.

We've been using 800hosting for about 2 years now and they have been great for us. They're a little more than what you're paying, but their prices are still good, and their support is excellent. Always respond to support requests with a minute or two, and I can always get them on the phone if I need. Their data-center is in Dallas Texas (not sure if you need a US server). They offer manager and un-managed. http://www.800hosting.com/

That's great except for the fact that their "DDoS protection" is misleading to say the least. Someone I know ordered a server with them recently and when it succumbed to an attack, this was 800hosting's official support reply:

I don't recommend doing business with a company like that which so blatantly misrepresents it's services.

I second liquidweb, their support is very good.

Also check out sharktech, they have some great deals & fair support.

Not saying that this is for you, but, serverpronto.com are selling a dedicated server for 29$ a month. That is AMD 2000XP , 256MB of Ram, and 40GB Diskspace. That's cheaper than many VPS hosting deals. Has anybody ever tried them, or know anything about Server Pronto, because, well, it sounds like a good deal, but I don't know.

How can you recommend a server with 200gb bandwidth when the site is using OVER 1000gb?

Before Going and trying to find another server it would be much better to spend a little bit of time and determine where the problem lies with your current server. You will need an experienced Admin and a few hours over about a week to determine the actual bottleneck.

What sort od site? Is it heavily database dependant? are you serving static files using apache rather than using one of the small, faster web servers? Is the disk IO too slow? do you have sufficient RAM?

There really is not a lot to go on at the moment. Once you know the answer to all of the above questions you are probably in a position to decide on exactly what you need. I would guess that you might even need to consider running more than 1 server at the moment.

Until you know what is happening, it would be a waste of money to simply upgrade - when you might be doing the wrong thing.
