Small Town Opportunities

I live in a small town, and there have been a lot of discrepancies in the athletic system. I have been working with an athletic instructor very closely with what they have noticed and this article was the outcome: http://www.themondakyak.com/the-mondak-yak/small-town-opportunities
For those of you who have grown up in a small town, was there a similar problem? And for those of you who grew up in large cities, was there the same result in large schools? I would like to compare results in other areas.

    What is there to understand?

I guess I'm in the big town situation where there isn't a team for every kid who wants to play so if you aren't one of the best you miss out - and the sporty kids are often on 2+ teams for different sports which means fewer opportunities for the have-a-go kids. And then we wonder why we have fat kids, apathy, disengagement etc. Why we have threads here about "favourite sports" and people list the sports they "watch" because they don't actually "do".

I do get worried at the win at all costs attitude where players aren't rotated fairly, are sent on to play when injured and have a heap of pressure on them. I don't know how accurate American movies are but if they portray school sports even 10% accurately then I'm really glad I'm not raising my kids there. Your talking about Canada and I'm even more in the dark about school sports there.

I was raised to believe that it was better to be a team player than somebody who wanted to win at all cost. I got married and my wife has two kids from a previous marriage that believe in winning at all cost. My step son used to tear up if he'd lose a game (any game). A couple years ago I told them that I was done playing any board games with them since none of them knew how to win or lose graciously. They are better now. They still get upset if they lose, but at least they don't get mad or cry. I do see this as an American thing. It varies from family to family, but I've seen too many instances where kids get mad and throw fits if they lose. I now have a 4.5 year old and she is a bit more balanced. She likes to win, but she is also gracious and feels bad over someone else's loss.

Good points, the problem in this area is again the social status that certain kids have while the others just get shoved to the side because they don't carry a certain name. Even parents are buddy buddy with the coaches to ensure that their child plays.

Hard on the kids but at least the superficial suck-ups are seen for what they are.

They truly are, and the worst part is is that even after this article is released, the town won't change a thing.
