Web hosting for Lots of Sites ... Am I doing this right?

Discussion in 'General Business' started by mawcluster, Dec 22, 2006.

I'm fairly new to the internet marketing world, but I have created one site, and it's made me a considerable amount of money. Now I want to expand, start creating more and see what I can accomplish.

What's the best way to go about this? I pay about 6.99 a month for hosting at my original site. Do I have to pay 6.99 for every site I own, and then also buy the domain name for a few bucks as well? I can see this starting to get expensive pretty quickly. If I own 10 sites, I'll be paying a monthly hosting charge of about $70.

Am I missing something, is there an easier and cheap way? Or is that just the way it works and I have to be willing to invest the monthly hosting costs...?

    Thanks

I'm on DreamHost and you can host as many sites as you want for no extra charge. You can get a $45 dollar discount with the code SAVE45B.

Oh. Cool...I will check out dreamhost. Is there any problems setting up databases as backends of your site through that host?

While Ive never used DreamHost before, I have heard that sometimes it can take up to 30 minutes to set up a database.

Dreamhost does not have a normal control panel. If you are getting a routine on the web its better to get a host with cPanel.

Ok. I guess I have to look at plans and sort out which one is best.

I also have to take everyone's advice with a grain of salt, as I'm sure some of you are tied into the hosting sites somehow and will profit from me using their services.

Any sites that are definite No-No's?

I buy reseller accounts, but will soon move to a dedi server. Right now I have 12 sites on a server that has never went down for me in the past 4 months for $70 a year. Reseller or dedi is the way to go if you plan on making several sites. cPanel and WHM also helps ;-)

I like hostgator, been with them almost 3 years now (In March/April I think): I've had their reseller plan which will take care of unlimited websites. Their support & uptime have been great for me.

They offer both WHM & cPanel - both easy to use tools to manage multiple websites & packages start at $25/month depending on your needs.

I have a regular shared host that uses Cpanel, and I host 4 or 5 sites on there.. I also have a Dreamhost account that hosts 2 blogs and a phpbb forum. I'm equally happy with both. Cpanel is a bit easier to use, but you really can't beat the price of Dreamhost.

Find yourself a host that either offers addon domains or get yourself a reseller account. That way you can host as many domains as the package allows.

I am not a fan of DreamHost but for some people they seem to work okay. There are better plans out there.

You will be happier if you stay witha host that uses the same control panel you have already learned.

I find the cPanel addon domain to be a bit tricky to set up. DirectAdmin makes it as easy as DreamHost which I think is their one stong point.

The first step is to take a look at the stats for your existing site. How much disk space and bandwidth are you really using? Then multiply that by the number of sites you want and add 25%. This is the real package size you are seeking.

For less than $10 per month you should be able to host 20 sites that are not "usage pigs".

That is the way WHM works in a reseller account.

I have bever seen a server set up up so that addon domains from cPanel work that way. My experience has been that you have to create a subdomain and point the addon to subdomain.

    Have I missed something?

hotsgator is okay for what you're trying to do. Look at their reseller accounts. But one caveat. If your sites get busy, you can experience downtime depending on who else they have on that server.

I complained about it and all they could tell me was to get a dedicated server because it's shared. The sites were nowhere near their bandwidth or disk usage limits so I thought that was a shitty response from them.

Ok, if you have an shared account at hostgator you will get a cPanel.
In the cpanel, you create an addon domain directly:
    1.input the domain,
    2.input user name and
    3.password
Thats it, it cannot be more simple.
