    Open Source Challenge: Mybb vs. SMF vs. phpBB2

    • Do you have any experience with open source forums?
    • Do you think SMF or phpBB2 is your favorite?
    • While this is not an 'official' contest, do you want a chance to win a (unspecified amount) cash prize?
    • Try setting up one of these (link below), and 'play with it' for a few hours or even days of new fun.

    1. If you actually try myBB
    2. Still like one of the others better?...
    3. and are able to be the first to convince me to switch back (away from myBB)...
    4. Then you win a mysterious cash prize.
    5. Do you actually think the others are better (after trying out myBB)?
    6. Why?

    Edit: The myBB anti-spam protection (on new registration) is a 'high-security' Captcha which can be hard to read.
    I'm going now to find the custom modifications I made to help it be a bit more user friendly.

    ///Here it is the easy mod for 'captcha.php'

    Note: This section is very easy to find, you are changing the original values (not posted), to make the final image more user friendly (without losing much security)

    $img_width = 238;
    $img_height = 72;

    // The following settings are only used for TTF fonts
    $min_size = 31;
    $max_size = 32;

    $min_angle = -30;
    $max_angle = 30;

    Does SMF have a built-in feedback system, like our green rep? I'm thinking phpBB2 does not, but I haven't used it in a while.

    I tried SMF once, but really think MyBB is great.
    Have you ever tried it?

    Nothing beats MyBB as an open source forum software solution. I'm sorry but phpBB and SMF just suck.

    You are dis-qualified for "the mysterious cash prize" :rolleyes:
    But I like your opinion very much :)

    Still wanting to know (from anyone), unmodified does either SMF or phpBB2 have a community feedback reputation system?
    Is it flexable?
    for example...

    Level 9 admins can give rep 9 (or 90) times a day, and each feeback counts for 9 (or 10) maximum points (or less)

    Level 4 mods (for example) can give rep 4 (or 40) times a day, and each feeback counts for 4 maximum points (or less)
    These are examples, and any admin can easily face a mind-boggling :confused: combination of useful, fun options.
    MyBB is way above average open source software, and fun to work with too.

    Un-modified, does either SMF or phpBB2 have anything (regarding dynamic community rep) this good???

    I think "Karma" is the "SMF version" of the green rep system.. Check their support forums for more details on how it works.
