I'm thinking about this allot. I used to run teahost.com and it did bring nice profits... with instant domain registration service, dns management and full control - are following prices okay for the folks here on DP?

    .com USD 8.45
    .net USD 8.45
    .org USD 8.95

    .info USD 2.45 SALE!
    .biz USD 8.95
    .us USD 7.95

    .name USD 8.95
    .eu USD 18.99
    .tv USD 29.99

and some other stuff, like digital certificates for 45$ etc.

I'm an old directi reseller with over 20,000$ balance on my account, I had full blown business. Now I manage only renewals, so I thought maybe I can revive my old buss :) and start selling new registrations, I still have to dedicate time to renewals of old customers, why not continue doing that buss :)

yes, I think I can get 7.95 easily for com/net.

what are cheapest domain registrars right now?

If you post coupons out for 80 cents, I think you'll be very competitive. :)

They are fine but I have seen 6.99 for .com/net/org from people using reseller accounts. I would keep them at that and see how it goes.

yeah, sure that's possible too, but look what happened with registerfly.com that's what happens when u push prices too low, eventually u die out - as revenues aren't enough to cover support fees, etc.

but they aren't that good... I've seen many negative posts about their service. Well after all, in business price isn't the only mean of competition :)

Yeah, 1&1 is pretty pathetic. I'd rather pay a buck or two more and get quality service than put up with their crap any day. Worry less about the price and more about how you can make your customers happier than other registrars can. A lot are probably repeat customers, so do something to stick out in their mind as being a bit different than the rest. Not really sure what to tell you on that front though.

That's a start, but others offer that, and some for less. Offer various coupon codes on a repeated basis to get people to continuously check back to see what you're offering. With so many registrars and resellers, honestly your success will very likely be more in your marketing than anything else.

Ive dont a TON of research on the domain registration business. Price domains low, $6.99-$7.49, and make your money back with web hosting and other complementary services. Offer coupons and an affiliate program. Bring something unique to the table (I have an idea for this id be willing to sell). Get 24x7 support if possible. My research shows that most people are not satisfied with their current registrars support system. Good luck!

thanks... yeah, one of the reasons I had huge customer base when I had hosting/domain business was due to support system. Along with 5 other people, I was online for 8 hours a day. And always had somebody replacing me at night. I also have very interesting ideas regarding support.

    thx for the suggestion though

Com and net cost registrar 6.00 and 25 cents ICANN fee. 1 and 1, they increase their renewal prices.

You have to make sure you make a profit, you would need to keep up the good support you talked about and that costs money. A coupn or discount once in awhile would do wonders, but if your only breaking even (or worse) you'll be out of business in no time.
Certainly sounds like you know what your doing already, go for it!

Are you referring to becoming a reseller based domain registrar? Start it by signing up with directi or with any directi's reseller. If you are looking to become an ICANN Accredited Registrar, then you might have to increase the effort in order to qualify for that down the road. See here.

You will need to pay them 2500 application, and prove that you have at least $75,000 in capital. You don't need to pay $75K, you just need to have it
File an application, and you are on your way.
