What's your experience with them? I am a complete newbie, decided to buy domain and hosting from them, placed order last Thursday and till now nothing, not a single e-mail reporting status of the order. I contacted their customer support and (via e-mail) got a response saying that i have to wait and they will send me an e-mail once my account's setup is done. I would like to know if anyone has hosting from them and whether they are ok or should i look for some other company. So far it doesn't look too god :(.

If you check http://www.webhostingtalk.com , you will see that 1and1 has grown so huge that their service level is pretty slow. Put it this way, it would probably not make it on the top 500 web hosts which people would recommend.

Sorry that you got trapped with 1and1. I guess you are new to all this, so went for 1and1.

Anyway, It'd have been better if you had booked your domain with godaddy or namecheap.
Cheap options are not always good - the same for 1and1. I'd personally suggest Namecheap.

If the order still hasn't been processed, email (or better call them up if toll free) them and ask to cancel the order. I've heard a lot of nightmare stories from 1and1 users and they are true.

As for hosting, HostGator has very good reputation in the industry currently.
I'd suggest hosting with them. Check HostGator Reviews and Coupons if you're interested.

Yeah i am a complete newbie. I went for 1and1 because they had unbelievably low price (.com domain + 6months of hosting for $17) and i saw their ad in Entrepreneur so i assumed it's not a scam ;-). I can only guess how hard it will be to cancel this damn order ... but i will give them a call. Thanks!

Just make sure they do not continue billing you after you cancelled from them.

Well, you know, if it is too good to be true, it is most probably not going to be true.

Cheap does not equate to good. So you need to be careful. It might help if you visit http://www.webhostingtalk.com and search through the forums to see if there are any comments about the web host you have shortlisted so that you do not fall into the same trap as others do.

    Wishing you all the best.

I use 1and1 and before they grew, their customer service and response time was quick. Recently they have also been having a lot of down time and server crashes that they never had the past few years of using them.

Trying to cancel a domain name may take a while. If you read the fine print, I believe you have it till the time runs out. YES and make sure they don't recharge your credit card.

I've been through a nightmare with 1and1 about 1 year ago,
however I would be ready to forgive and get back to them, their support level can be painful but hosting service itself is a topper. Definitely among the best, too bad they don't always cater for their customers like has happened to me.

I have been using a1websolutions dot com for some small projects over the last week and have been very happy with their response time and service. Placed an order 3 days ago for a VS and it was up and running in about 15 minutes. May want to check them out if you don’t want to spend the big bucks on servers.

Its panel is alright. Needs patience while working with it and everything is ok once you get used to it.
What I'd be more concerned about is the 100Mb limit per database.

I've been using 1and1 for about a year now, and don't have a problem with them. My sites have never been down, I know some people have had bad experiences with them, but I haven't.

I can't stand the control panel, but it's the 100mb limit that's got me shopping around.

And that is too bad that a reputable hosting company is setting limits like that. Basically, you will not be able to run a high traffic portal on a 1and1 shared hosting account, sadly.

I've been using 1&1 (host & registar) for more than one year (along with other hosting services) and everything is all right so far.

My sites had very few down time. The only bad point is the service, they take too long to answer query (via email) but from a technical standpoint, it's fine.

imho, at this price, if you need basic and reliable hosting (nothing fancy in my case, shared hosting with basic CMS : WP, Joomla, PHPLD...), that's fine for the price.

I use 1and1 for large number of domains - and I have no problems with them at all. Once I had to get in touch with their customer service and it wasn't delayed or anything.

Long ago they had free hosting and I used to host with them, but it wasn't that good - so I am not hosting with them.

From my experience, every single host that was offering custom control panel against the most common ones, their panels were not fantastic. That may also be because we are used to cpanel, plesk and the like, while 1and1, dreamhost, godaddy, have invested in their personal control panel solution. I am lucky to be getting used to them fast enough to not start yelling about them being *** or ***** ;)

this is offtopic for 1and1, but somehow I find its much easier to use d/b options in dreamhost control panel compared to cpanel or else.

I just use them for domain reg. for 5.99 per year then point them to another server with a better hosting price.
