I hate to do this but having quite a 1 on 1 encounter with 1and1, I feel I need to share this to help you out.

Theres a thread here that captures how many of us are displeased with 1and1service in a very expressive way. http://forums.digitalpoint.com/showthread.php?t=60380

Also theres a website out there for displeased domainers of 1and1. http://1and1sucks.info

Having said all this I still have an account with domains & hosting with them. Why? I have found a new host I like as yet, so like many of us we hate to hate 1and1, but we are stuck for one reason or the other. :D

That website has been around for quite some time. I've seen it last year. Very artistic.
Surprised they are still up, 1and1 would have easily taken them down since their actions do qualify as illegal.
    That's funny though :)
Can't find a better offer, can you ;)

I used to have like 6 accounts with them before i went with a dedicated server somewhere else. Right now i still have one account with them. It's very affortable and you get a lot of space and bandwidth but customer service sucks....

if something goes bad you're on your own. When you call them they have no clue what to do and they just tell you that Tier 2 will have to handle this and they will email you when they fix it....and you never get an email.

Now this is the story I know, too :)
Only I used to get response, just that they were giving me enough time to forget about my initial support request so I had to refresh my mind about what problem I had

I guess the OP is worried about 1&1 not creating his hosting account and domains for days...not control panel or such.

I have never used 1and1 for hosting. But have used them for domains. Their customer service isn't all to great. So be cautious when using them.

1and1 is alright - not great but I don't expect to buy Rolls Royce for the price of Yugo!

I'm too lazy to read this whole thread...

But 1and1 was the first domain registrar I went with because they were cheap...they suck. I DO NOT recommend them.

Switch to Namecheap or Domainsite, both those seem to be better.

What type of hosting did you order from them? If you haven't received your welcome letter I would normally tell you to check your junk folder, but you said you've received an email back from them. If you'e been waiting since last Thursday, this is a week now. I hate to say this but it's time to find another host. Yes, as someone else said, there has been plenty of posts about them on other forums. Make sure you do your research before you sign up with a host. Don't go by price, for a couple extra bucks you'll be much happier with better support and not dealing with oversold hosts.

I'd go for the big players only. Even if their support is how others call it. Overnight companies may have splendid support to offer, and do the sales, and then go down all of a sudden with your website and money. Big companies that have always got an extra service or two to offer and earn from in case Hosting doesn't go well at some point, those are definitely worth considering. Well, for serious projects at least. Defining support is not always clear. Some of us expect our webhosts to install things for us, debug scripts, and if they fail to respond to these requirements, then they're bad.

Must not forget that the price for the hosting package cannot include aftersales services like website and script installations, etc. Not when we're talking about 4$ a month. Agree, advice is needed and always welcome. But then when you're given a cheap offer, you should be prepared to go and spend the money you saved on a webmaster to do stuff for you. That sounds logical to me.

I would agree, to a degree anyway. I agree, watch out for fly-by-night hosts. Some new hosting companies might be very good, however as Clive eluded to you have to wonder if they'll be in business next week. I would at least look for a more established company. Having million dollar advertising pocketbooks certainly doesn't mean better service and or support. Just my 2 cents worth.

I ordered the cheapest hosting (2.99 per month).

So it was more than a week and still not a sign of progress. The good part is that they still haven't charged my credit card. The part that sucks is i have day job and because of it i wasn't able to call them (in order to get the 24/7 technical support's number you have to log ...).

I blame myself for being a scrooge - i was almost clicking 'order' on GoDaddy site when i decided to look around if there are other offers.

I wrote them an e-mail asking for estimated date for order completion or if they are unable to give me that i asked how to cancel this order (i bet it won't be easy ;-).

Don't worry about that, you'll get your account set up, and you'll receive your invoice in a few days time. They will charge you, just give them a chance, no question there.

Everything should be fine until you hit the cancellation button - it won't work ;) Beware unauthorised charges later on. I've been through that story, and managed to file successful chargebacks with my bank. Once I fought over a £5,5 payment I did not authorise 1and1 to debit my account with, and they did. Insignifficant amount, I know but I can't afford to spread money here and there so I recovered every single penny they owed me. Verdict? 1and1 are a fantastic webhost, it's only their stuff that seem to have no idea what they're doing soemtimes :)

On a side note, Argos have charged my credit card 4 times when I bought a handycam on their online store. I was mad cause their stupidity cost me a penalty fee for unauthorised overdraft. Well, I continue to go shopping there. They are selling high quality products.
