Maybe you were getting too much traffic...that could have killed your server? At this stage I don't tweak any of mine, although having said that I've set Apache to a base install with no bells and whistles on one box just to keep things low resource wise. Seriously though, if your proxy was using the entire server you were probably getting a pile of traffic, I'd recommend making sure you're getting ads to those visitors and maximising your revenue so you can afford 1 box..and even more to load balance if required :)

Are you talking about a PHP based proxy or PERL?

If you are running a single instance of the PHP based proxy then you don't need to go with the heavier server configs. You'll probably saturate your uplink before breaking the server's back. It doesn't really take a monster server to push 9TB/month (which is about what you'd push on a 100 Mbit uplink.)

The PERL (CGIProxy) based proxy is a lot more resource intensive as it strikes up the PERL interpreter each time it is run. mod_perl might help you there - depends how the proxy is written, but you'll probably see some benefit from using it.

RAM is probably going to be of most help. Try to get 2GB or more. It'll help in tuning Apache.

Do you need to be able to handle high peak usage or sustained rates? What killed your previous server?

    Cheers,

Indeed, CGIProxy sites are CPU consuming, I doubt you can handle more than 30 users with 1GB ram, hence I've personally experienced. The CPU Usage is sky high. Even if you optmized perl, it still wouldn't do much of a site, right now Im running 17 PHProxy sites on my 2gb ram server, it's perfect.

PHP supports myspace sites, yes they do. Im not advertising my site or anything but you can go to episodee.com and enter myspace and gmail, both works.

There's no good option or bad option. It's all about how you can handle it, if you have a huge load of visitors, you need better ram, if not, a 512MB ram normally handles good loads. I can't give you any estimate as I donno how your site functions, but my phproxy sites works perfectly on a 2GB ram, and the cpu load is low.

Why use a CGI Proxy? Get the new PHP Proxy that allows you to get onto myspace, because thats what most teens are looking for, and PHProxy only takes up a lot of bandwidth.

For a PHP Proxy? Yes, absolutely. However, you'll chew up a lot of bandwidth - probably more than most VPS/shared host providers are willing to give you for $30/month after a month or so.

PHP v0.5b2 seems to work quite well with MySpace in my experience.

If you know how to tune a server, use PHP based proxy then you can probably use a 3G processor (or AMD equiv), a Gig of ram and as muich B/W as you can afford.

ATM, I am using a AMD 2600+ with 1Gig Ram and running 4 proxies on it. It runs just fine. I did not waste resources by running anything that is not absolutely needed - so no control panel on this box and I opted for FreeBSD as the OS. This sort of setup is not for everyone - as you really need to know how to run a server to make it work.

If you think you need something like CPanel, then up the specs of your box to make sure you have enough resources (go for at least a 3.6G processor and 2G ram)
