Ok, well seeing as this is the new "thing" I figured might as well slap one onto then network, market it and see how it goes..

Firstly, what do most proxy owners recommend as a host? Could you post me a link to hosts that you use and think are the best, that allow proxies?

Second, what do you here consider the BEST proxy script? Cgi or php, which is most feasible and loved among proxy users...

Also, besides a nice logo and a domain how much should be set aside for say 3 months of hosting? and expenses to market this would basically be myspace and some link exchanges and top sites or is there something I don't know?

    Thanks alot

The latest version of the PHP proxy handles MySpace a lot better than previous revs.

Few shared hosts permit proxies so you might be looking at a starter VPS or a dedicated box.

Do a search for "proxy host" on here and you'll find a million answers.

Without a doubt, users love CGIProxy because they can log into MySpace, etc. Though PHProxy is adding that. Problem is, CGIProxy is extremely CPU-intensive, while PHProxy isn't as CPU-intensive, but heavier on the bandwidth.

Whatever your host is charging you x 3
For marketing, it's just like any other site...whatever you feel like spending to get the word out on it. Good luck.

why are the plans so cheap here; http://www.vpsbyte.com/
would this be a better choice? http://www.servint.net/

I would like to start a proxy too. However I want to limit my traffic toward certain demographics that I can monetize efficiently. What if I were to ban certain countries, would I still have to get an expensive hosting plan?

What type of traffic would I expect (after a few days) if I submitted my site to those proxy listing sites, as well as other sites (myspace, forums, etc..)?

I was once try to host my proxy on vps, (personally ask them first if i could host my proxy site on their vps plan, end the answer is yes). so then i bought one vps (managed vps) from it, but after a couple of weeks, their begun to complain, that my proxy site cousing other vps run slow. and they suggest me to upgrade to dedicated.

So, my suggeston is if you really want to get in the proxy business, dont go for vps, just go straight to dedicated. just a suggestion. hope it give you some thoughts

Running a proxy is really simple compared to an actual full content driven website. I use PHP proxy right now, and I am fully able to login to Myspace just fine. I have had a lot of people test it and it works just fine for Myspace. I do have to say that it does take up soooo much bandwidth though. But, with a little tweaking, that can be taken care of as well. I use Servint and have been very happy with the help and service I have received. I was a VPS noob and they answered my questions right away. Highly recommended!
