    That is a good idea.

The internet is also saturated with so many internet dating sites and most people would rely on bigger companies such as lavalife. You would need to make your site as unique as possible (maybe target very specific audience like 'goth dating', 'soccer fans dating', 'this location dating', etc  nothing too general )

Definitely true. You should try a local one and try offline ways to promote your site. Forexample I managed to contract with a production company to make a few parties "sponsored" by my site for an exchange of a web site:rolleyes: You can advert your site in yellow pages or give away your site branded t-shirts. Just be creative to promote your site. To me offline advertising gives best visitor/cash ratio

I would suggest to create specific community or special group before you start providing dating service.

    that makes really sense
you need to find the niche where youre not facing too many competitors and maybe something youre also interested in...
makes it easier to write content :)

Dating sites are highly competitive; be sure to have a way to market it right.

You need quantity of existing members in a dating site in order to attract people to sign up for it. I believe that people want quick results and be where the crowd are. If there are just a few guys in there and each time they do a search, they bring out no match, I believe they will just move on the other hundreds of other sites which would yield them something.

It is going to be a lot of work and you should be prepared to spend a lot on advertising and perhaps do the legwork in getting people to sign up.

It is one of those business which would have the 'chicken and the egg' issue. Basically, it is difficult to get people to stay if you do not have the crowd and it is difficult to get the crowd if people don't stay.

Of course, if you have deep pockets, you can run contests and probably pay people to be active and to invite their friends, that may help you build up the numbers.

I think in this game, there is no such thing as a small player. It is either you are big or you are gone.

You can put adsense ads on a dating site. Plentoffish earns from Adsense alone..

But dating is such a crowded place, you need a huge budget to get it running.

Doing partnership with a women forum or women portal might seems a good idea to fill in few of the profiles first... ;)

The dating site world is REALLY populated, but if you do it locally, it could work. Out here in Chicago, all the neighborhoods have dating sites all linked to this one larger site. I see signs all over for LakeviewSingles.com or WrigleyvilleSingles.com and so forth.
