To be a good graphics designer do I need to have photoshop? Are there any ways I can get it cheaper than retail price?

that's the software i use for graphic and web designs... but there are some other softwares you can use... it really depends on you... But photoshop can be a good start. Try searching for available software downloads online... I'm not sure if there is any.

Photoshop is quite good for creating great graphics and designs. For beginning, do follow some tutorials(google for some or search pixel2life.com) and then your skills and experience will improve. You can become a professional within a month.

Not to disagree with your opinion, Felu, but I am not very sure any person can become a professional in Photoshop in just a month.
To get in the basics, to get an overview of the software - definitely but to become a professional you need a much longer period of practice.
Anyway, using a noob tutorials is my piece of advice too.:)

I would recommend trying GIMP, a nice open source photoshop clone that is available for unix, windows, and mac.

    http://www.gimp.org/

(you will also need to install the GTK+ 2 Runtime Environment)

    I agree.

In my opinion, Photoshop is the best software for web designing and graphics designing. I am using it for about last 4 years for designing websites.

The big advantage of using PS is that you can find 1000s of tutorials and articles on internet related to PS.

    Hope this helps.

Hi, photoshop is the best way to go. But as mentioned before there is gimp, and some stores will have a college student discount for software,(you may need to find a studend to buy it for you if you are not one) and I heard Adobe plans to release a online version of photoshop in the next six months or so.

use the photoshop 30 day trail on adobe for now. if you are a student or know any, you could buy it from here or have someone buy it for you from here: http://www.journeyed.com/department.asp?NAV=01 however that is the educational version for 289 dollars and you are technically not suppose to do any pro work with it if that is what you are looking to do. hope that helps you. you can pm me if you have any questions.

I would also say knowing photoshop would really help you a lot in designing. There are a lot of tutorial site about photoshop. Also, you can do wonders in photoshop, but it will take time since there is a lot to learn.

    Hello..

i actually startet out with paint shop pro. At the time it was a bit cheaper (i think it still is)... Photoshop is a far bette program but it also takes more time to learn it all... i believe it would be hard to find it at a cheep price..

I don't know of anything that would substitute Photoshop unless its Paint Shop Pro. Other then that I would recommend saving and getting it because it is the standard and most designs that you will want to do is covered in it.

if u live in canada, u can download via p2p legally. otherwise, give The GIMP a try. Not as good or as intuitive as photoshop.
