For those that own social networking sites can you share your advertising approach. And for those that dont but just know a lot about marketing can you please help me out.

What is the best way to promote a new social networking site? Adwords, affiliate programs? should i pay per sign up with an affiliate program? how much should i pay? should i buy links on other sites? banners?

    what works the best?

Good old link exchanges work good just keep it in the demographics (same types of sites). Adwords might work good if the cost per click is low. I am interested to here this answer as well.

In all honesty, that is a very difficult group to target and you will need to offer them something revolutionary to get them to switch from sites like myspace and facebook. The only social networking communities that still stand a chance are those that go after niche markets like "bmw car enthusiats" or "pit bull owners". You would have to go beyond simply targeting "car" or "dog enthusiats"...and dig even deeper.

Why not focus on a more targeted market. Once you start to build your userbas, you can always broaden the focus.

Also, posting the site in your sig would be a good help to get you going.

Why not purchase comments for myspace and have a drawing for a free ipod or some other cool gadget. I am sure some people will make a profile to win, and they might even stay. Make it so the more friends they invite the more chances they have....

LOL thats funny that you mention that...because we're actually going to have a point system build in for each members where they earn points for referrals, and activity on the site. There will be a store where they can exchange points for prizes.

Some free give outs may induce them to join the network and share among the friends. Apart from Online exposure you can even try some offline mode to attract those folks.
