Adsense in Gallery2 album view - free tip!

    Hi,

I was looking for a solution for this problem and didn't find one, so I solved it myself with my limited programming skills! And thought I would offer the tip here if anyone is trying to do the same because I don't have a blog I can put it on, and someone here will find it useful.

You want one (let's say the first) "block" in Album view in your Gallery2 gallery to be occupied by an Adsense block, not by the album details, right? This is so it blends nicely in with the rest of the site. See my mountain biking gallery to see what it looks like (this should not be construed as encouragement to click on ads).

Find the album.tpl file in the directory of your current template and copy it down into the local directory.

    Edit it as follows:

This should get the effect you are looking for. The css is messy, but the padding centres the ad if you are using 250 x 250 format (might have to fiddle with this if you use a different ad/template format).

It should also be easy to adapt so that the ad occupies, say, the 2nd column instead of the first.

Let me know if you have any success with this, or if you see any fatal flaws. This is provided purely out of the goodness of my heart and I cannot take any responsibility for your Gallery2 imploding on you!

My first impressions were that it improved the CTR slightly, indeed hugely in some cases.

interesting placement. it would be better if it was an image the same size as the album thumbnail. I wonder if that would be against the tos?

Good thought - I don't think it would, I might have a try of that. I think it would be a case of deft blending rather than "encouraging users to click on Google ads or bringing excessive attention to ad units", which is what they are afraid of.
