Have been reading a lot about ad placements: giving freshness by changing placement, or not doing it too often kind of advices in many posts. Would like to know how long one should wait to decide some placement is not working.

    Hi rans,

I'd give each placement a 1-2 week trial, though it all really depends on how much traffic your site receives. Obviously with higher traffic you'll be able to cut trial times down, but I've found that 1-2 weeks is good for new-ish sites.

Thanks dcristo and ponynugget, is there any other parameter in the adsense report which can help determine the placements which are not working. As you can I am a beginner and am learning this thorugh DP members.

People change ad placements not because they want to refresh the look of the site mainly, but because they are trying to find the PERFECT ad placement (with perfect ad placement I mean the placement which performs best for you in clicks and in revenue). If you already have a placement that brings you good clicks and a decent revenue then why would you want to change it? Or at least, you could change it for a week or so to see how the change will perform and if the new change will bring you more clicks and more revenue, if that fails, get back to the old placement.

So trial and error. And some placement may work for some and may not for others. Hmm. Thanks. Well the question arised as currently nothing is working for me much. Its been already a month in adsense and only $1.31 is my earning with 3 clicks. So I was wondering whether go for changing the palcement or give it some more time.

Yes a week would be good - its well worth keeping a log book - and recording all of your changes - it is surprising how just a few small tweaks can make a difference and its well worth recording them so you have a record of them for any future sites you might make.

    Best Wishes

Doing some testing with the placement allways helps. Find out which is the best.

Also just to make your testing less of a hastle look at what others have to say about what type of placement is the best.

You earnings might depend from billion of reasons one of which of course is the ad placement. But what i want to ask you, do you have a heavy traffic website or you get something around 30-50 uniques a day? If the second option is you traffic i would concentrate on building traffic rather than ad placement (well, you could play around with both, but concentrate more on traffic). It is MUCH easier to play around and find out which ad placement works better if you have a decent traffic website and see how it performs (higher the traffic, higher the % to receive click on your ads and higher the % to receive results on ad placement).

We run a limited test on ad placements we use the channels to track impressions and clcks. To get a good sample we test for 2 months and ony change one thing at a time. Maybe background color or location never both at the same time. everyday-wisdom.com

1 Week sounds about right. But be careful not to change your ads to much. If one placement works, stick with it.

It depends alot also on how much traffic you are getting. If your getting 10,000 page impressions in 1 day and not a click. I would probbaly move it after first day. I base more of my decisions on traffic amount and not just a week or some time frame. There is alot of books and such on controlling traffic to your sites and how to collect information from that traffic. How long they were on your site. What was their screen resolution. Where they on a broadband or dialup still. Think of the big picture of your website when your making decisions. And if all else fells and your not getting clicks. Usually you need to start from scratch with a new design and different content style.
