    Depends on:

    1. how good you are at marketing /and branding
    2. what you can offer that other highly competitive sites dont
    3. how much money your willing to spend. They can take up alot of bandwidth if successful. You will need dedicated hosting
    4. use custom built software rather than open-source or off-the-shelf

i beg to differ, there is one great open-source script that is very customizable so it looks like a custom built script. you can use the free open-source version or buy the license to re-brand it.

i just found it and i am just building 5 sites using it because i was so impressed with it. ;)
hint: last link in my sig is the one i am just starting to customize with it

if your using software available to everyone else then essentially you are breaking rule number 2.

its like with pligg sites. None of them will ever beat digg.

I was thinking to start a social marketing site a year ago. But 2 things you got to think -
    1. are you the same as everyone else?
    2. is it a viable business model? do you have the capability of creating one?

I beg to differ with the "naysayers". If you have a niche and you're willing to work, it won't matter if you use an off the shelf script or a custom one. Most custom scripts are open enough that in the future you can customize them as you see fit.

Bottom line, you can be successful, but keep in mind, that Myspace and other sites have basically made it impossible to charge for access, so be prepared to supplement your site with some other form of revenue.
