I think badges have already jumped the shark The only thing I can't stand more than those are sites that use the word "beta" next to the site name, to be trendy.

This one has been out for a long while...

You are better off reading about web usability, colour design and the implications of colour combinations, then you will have the skills to design a number of things - not just a specific banner.
