    If I use a CMS, does that eliminate the use of CSS and html? Am I limited to the themes that CMS provides me?

    The limitation would only be from yourself i guess, but theres nothing to eliminate the use of HTML and CSS from using a CMS.

    It depends what CMS you use, most have a lot of free themes available, im planning on creating my own for Joomla but i dont know enough about CSS and XHTML yet so im currently learning about those, i want the freedom of being able to do that.

    If you go for Joomla CMS, then you need a background on HTML and CSS if you wish to tweak the layout.

    That's true of any content management system actually. Hmm... perhaps once I finish my WordPress master theme framework, I should get started on a Joomla version...

    Dan Schulz, try Joomla 1.5. I think you'd love it. I just started learning Drupal and it's as powerful as Joomla. Drupal is more complicated than Joomla, though.

    Don't get me wrong, I've downloaded it, I just haven't done anything with it yet. One project at a time, as the old saying goes. :cool:

    And please, just call me Dan. No need to be so formal. :)

    PHP knowledge would only be necessary if you're going to be writing your own theme from scratch, and even then, depending on the CMS, only a rudimentary level of PHP knowledge combined with how the CMS' API works will be all you need, aside from solid HTML/CSS skills.
