Change color in photoshop

I'm trying to change the gray parts of the image to the dark red I have selected, but it comes out pink. Anyone know what I'm doing wrong?

 

Make sure that layer opacity/fill is set to 100% .

 

I checked that and they are both set to 100%

 

Maybe the type of the document. Upload a bigger screenshot.

 

I'm not sure how a bigger screenshot will give your more information.
It's a gif RGB color.

I have never used the color replacement tool before and maybe it just work different from what I expected.

If I take a regular brush and paint on the image, the color comes out correctly.

 

Try to click this.. maybe you are working in " Quick mask mode ".. just a wild guess..

 

Thanks for your suggestion, but it is in standard mode.....

To make sure it wasn't something image related, I tried opening a new image, drawing a 1px line in gray #efefef and then try to replace with the red #cc0000 and it came out as pink on that one as well .

 

I suspect that the color you are changing is not gray but black with a low opacity.

I, of course, don't see your file but check that the actual layer is at 100%

 

Maybe your layer has some strange effect? Look at the layer you're working on and make sure it doesnt have like...Hue or Light effect. Sometimes it does that...could be your brush too, check the brush effect and turn off whatever that's not default.

 

try to reinstall the software

 

There are some options on colour blending in PS. Try to check it, setting should be "normal", other options are for example "substract", "multiply" or smthn like that (do not have PS now - when I'll come back home I'll check it).

 

I deleted CS2 and installed cs3 yesterday and it's still the same. This is with the default CS3 settings.

You guys can try it out by opening a new image (RGB/white background) and draw something in color #efefef.
Then change to color #cc0000 and use the color replacement tool and see if the efefef changes to pink or #cc0000.

No, it's not only that specific image. As you can see in my post above, it also happens when I create a new image from the photoshop menu: file/new/

Try and create a white background image and replace color efefef with cc0000 or any dark color. It happens with all dark colors. If I try to replace with dark green the color comes out as light green etc...

 

Have you checked the colour mode it's set to? It may be set to grayscale or something along those line - that has caught me out before

 

Oh hehe were stupid

The color replacement tool is in "color" mode. Look at the top tool bar. So it changes the light gray to a light shade of red. So if you try to change a dark gray, you will get a dark shade of red.

I'm afraid the color replacement tool isn't what you're looking for in this situation because it doesn't replace the actual RGB value of the background with the RGB value of the tool. When it is in color mode, it only replaces the "color" of it but not the brightness.

There are many ways to solve this. Photoshop has been build so you can do things in many ways.. so just use what is more simple and fast for you. GL
