Making a stock photo file size small enough for web use

Discussion in 'Photoshop' started by pipes, Apr 23, 2008.

Say if im looking at purchasing a stock photo for use in the design of a site and the lowest they have available (file size) is 4.0 Megapixels 2314 x 1728 px, would i have trouble getting this file size down to a jpeg that is small enough to not munch up bandwidth everytime the page is loaded?

For example if the image was used in a wordpress theme, for the header, naturally the dimensions will be resized to fit but would it pose probs with still being a rather chunky sized file?

if you're working in photoshop, it has a save for web option that can reduce the file type and size

Thanks iamays, and it would have no problem doing that, reducing right down from the larger size, to something acceptable (file size) without losing too much quality?

Nope, usually downsizing retains resolution fairly well. Making images much larger is where you get issues.

Any graphics editor will allow you to resize, not just Photoshop. There are also online editors like http://snipshot.com/ that will let you do it.

    btw pipes,

even microsoft picture manager will let you do that, you can choose between
big photo for website or small one, big photo for email message ro small one, and etc..

    Good Luck.

There are options as to the quality of the .jpg that you can lower for a smaller file size.
