    That button is so 2005 and you need a call to action in several places, including right at the top. The register link isn't obvious enough and is in the middle of the menu. People are used to seeing the login/signup on the right (see example)

    From an SEO perspective, there is nothing to tell the search engines why that button is so important

    Can you recommend a better (free) wordpress theme, that does that?

    Web design isn't really my thing,
    Been focusing on coding, mostly.

    So my design skills are rather out of date... LOL :)

    That's a big improvement and your design is "responsive" but have you looked at it on mobile? The register button goes way down below the original one. Look at doing more rows so that it sits higher or swap the block to the other side of the page.
