vBulletin 3.5

Okay, I just got done upgrading the forum to vBulletin 3.5. On the surface it probably doesn't look a whole lot different. The biggest changes are on the back-end/administration/moderation.

But there are a couple cool little things you can play with. It has AJAX support, which means if you use the quick reply on the bottom of a thread, it will be really quick (since it doesn't have to reload the thread to show your reply). You can also double click your post to edit it "live". You can do the same for thread titles.

You may need to flush your cache or do a hard refresh for the new stuff to work, as you might have old JavaScript files cached.

Anyway, I'm not 100% done with the upgrade... so I need to finish that up, but if you have any questions, put them here.

Okay... now that I'm not getting it up, besides the stuff I mentioned in the first post, there are a few other changes for end users...

The search function uses MySQL's fulltext engine, which works better than vBulletin's crappy internal one. So searches should be faster and more accurate now.

Read threads are now accurate across multiple visits. Instead of basing new threads on when you last visted the forum, it actually keeps track internally of the threads you ACTUALLY read. This will be nice.

Just fyi, in my cpanel it currently shows every single thread I have ever subscribed to, even if no one has responded in a month.

I know... sorry about that. It had to do that when switching to the new mechanism for keeping track of threads you have read. But now it will actually keep track of threads you REALLY read instead of based on the time you last visited. Mark the forum read if you want (that's what I did) to clear them all.

Might not be a bad idea to flush your browser cache... might have some old JavaScripts in there. :)

The forum is running a lot faster now. When I reply to a thread, it shows my response right away (even before I cleared my browser)

Yep... check the first post in this thread. That's some of the AJAX stuff. Double click on the post you just made (anywhere on the post) and you can "live" edit it too. :)

Make it REALLY nice for moderators. :)

How do you mark the forum as read? (I feel like I should be able to figure it out, but it's almost 2am, and just as easy to ask :) )

    thanks Shawn

We now have to click the quick reply button within a post in order to activate quick reply (this has been a feature in the 3.x series for awhile). Do you plan on changing this back to the old functionality where you could just type in the quick reply box?

Not sure yet, I'm going to test it out for a week or so just to see, but I have a feeling I may turn it back. But I at least want to give it a shot.
