Well, people "choose" to break the law. Personal choice leads to consequence. It wouldn't be a law if there was no consequence/punishment.

I'm glad someone finally mentioned that. I thought everyone forgot about that. Yeah, the US was outraged, hell the President (Clinton I think we was called) even got involved. My opinion was the kid got what he deserved. Actually they went easy on him and only gave him half the lashes if I recall correctly.

Of course they are. But they are legal. There is no comparison.

They know that the world media was watching, so yeah ... I don't think that he was hit half as hard as a local "graffiti artist" would have been.

Killing is wrong-except in self defense or in a morally just war...I think it was defined fairly well centuries ago----

On the other thing---absolutely they should have caned the little shit. Big difference.

Interesting news, I would have missed it if not for DP since I seldom read the papers.

I have to agree that hanging may seem harsh, but the trafficker ought to know doing drugs in Singapore will have serious consequences. We get fined SG$120 for not putting on seat belt in a car. Smoking will soon be illegal in pubs/discos. Young bloggers got jailed for racist comments. You must be plain stupid to do drugs in Singapore, or that you are in for the money and prepared for the worst.

    According to this article:
    http://www.yawningbread.org/arch_2001/yax-225.htm
    20 years jail term.

As I said, the trafficker must be mad to think that he can deal drugs in Singapore and get away alive if caught.

I have no idea. But the article said "40-year term halved for child molester", so that makes 20 years. :D

Gawd, it's all over our media - about how his mother wasn't allowed to hug him. Well he wouldn't have been there if her other son hadn't been in jail and this one didn't think this was a great way to "help" him. Maybe she should have hugged them more when they were little?!

The fool was only transitting through Singapore apparantly but rules are rules and he knew exactly what he was doing.

The Aussie Government had to ask for clemency but I doubt they thought it would be granted. Singapore has the right to set it's own laws and if they're uncomfortable for you then don't even transit through the place. That may make life difficult but it will test the strength of your objections.

Personally I'd avoid any of those countries right now while there are still questions of luggage tampering.

However in this case the drugs were strapped to his body and you can't blame anyone else for that sorry scenario.

Unfortunately that's not true at all. They all chose to take drugs before they were "addicted" and they all chose not to stop.

Once again, this is classic case of people "blame everyone else" and take no personal responsibility for anything. YOU CHOSE TO TAKE DRUGS, the drug dealer didn't make you.

    1. Blame a drug dealer for kids being on drugs? Where was the parents?

    2. A child molestor gets off with 20 years and a guy who was just going through the airport with drugs get death... real LOGICAL that government is huh

The guy was sorry for what he had done, he deserved a second chance at life after a lesser form of punishment. He was 25 years old...

I have to agree. It's cruel to take someone's life because of that. It's one thing to be tough, that was just inhumane.
