Try Rectangle ad formats like 250X250 - which you have already

Try Google's Site heat map - This guides you which is best place for ads to get more clicks

No offence but what makes that site attract a 2-5% CTR?
My blog is nowhere near those figures and I think my ad placements are decent

Maybe "Finance and Business" has a more computer illiterate audience who would be more likely to click ads. The topic of the website affects the CTR as well as the placement.

Not _every_ site. Depends upon the layout. If you slap that size into a site that just wasn't built to accommodate it, I'm willing to bet that it performs at a less level than something that might fit in better.

Yeah I've been considering a link line at the top, the kind that rather looks like it ought to be my menu.

Could be true, though I think my audience is mostly university students trying to cheat on their essays. The finance and business niche does tend to pay decently though for the clicks I'm getting.

It also depends where you get your traffic, most of my new users come from organic search which seems to convert nicely, the returning ones tend not to click as often.
