3D Logo Animation using Photoshop

Discussion in 'Photoshop' started by cre8ive, Jan 20, 2008.

I've been looking for a way to create a 3d logo animation, and for variety of reasons, I'm thinking about doing this using Photoshop. More specifically, I'm thinking about following two tutorials to accomplish this.

    http://www.photoshopguidesign.com/tutorials/cool_3d_logo_in_photoshop.html
    http://www.fierydarts.com/animation/3d-logo-creation-and-animation.htm

First one teaches how to create a 3D-ish logo. Second one teaches how to animate it. Is this really the best I can do? Is there a way to create a ... spectacular 3d logo animation using Photoshop besides this? Is there a tutorial on that?

i would suggest doing it in flash and then exporting it to gif (if flash allows that i don't know.if it does not, then you can always use a third party application to turn the swf into a gif.)

I don't think Photoshop can do more than what you've seen in those tutorials. Photoshop is made for 2D graphics, now it has support for 3D Models but, as far as I know, you need a third party software that created the 3D model, and as for the animation, Photoshop can't create 3D animation.

Photoshop isn't what your looking for...

As others have said, there is no actual way to create a 3D animation in photoshop. I suppose if you really had to you could create an animated gif but that wouldn't really be the best way to go about it.

In your opinion, what's the best way to go about this?

By the way, the animation I'm trying to create is rather small.

I'd say try a different program. Photoshop isn't for 3D animation yet. Maybe in CS4-5, maybe next year, who know, we might get a Photoshop that can do 3D models hehe :)

I would suggest reading a quick tutorial for a free open source 3d app like Rhino 3d, Blender, or DAX and doing it in one of those (if you don't have access to Max or Maya). It will be so worth it to get your feet wet in a little 3D to aid in your designs.

I just tried to check these three applications briefly.

q1. Is Rhino 3D an open source application? I don't find a link to a free one.

q2. Also where can I find DAX? I just searched, but I don't see anything related to 3D modeling ... ???

I'd recommend trying blender... It's the biggest open-source program of its kind and isn't to far behind maya and 3ds...

If you only want one animation I can do it for you for free, if you want.

Image Ready is no longer alive. Adobe Image Ready was merged with Photoshop in the creative suite 3. Anyway, Image Ready didn't support 3D animation :p.

There is also Swift 3d V5 (out now) and they have a trial. I dont know about rhino or any of the others, but i got swift yesterday and started to play with it. Idk what the learning curve is, but if you are wanting 3d, its a good place to start. Have you googled for tutorials past the ones you already have?

I've been working on this mostly for the last several days, but I haven't found any other tutorials. However, it seems that I can get by just using Photoshop for this particular project. In addition to what's already suggested in tutorials, I find that ...

    1. I should apply simple geometry like sine and cosine to get a little more accurate sizes of objects in the rotation animation.

    2. I can also tilt objects using Transformation tool. This seems to help a lot.

    3. Shadows.

I think I'm almost there (and what I will have should be good enough for this project ...).

For 3D logo animation, I use Xara3D. It is a stand alone application, not a Photoshop plugin. You can see an example of a 3D animated logo I created in the header at either of the links in my signature.
