Im new to all this proxy thing. I want to buy a proxy site.

Where can I get a decent one?
What are the requirements (hosting, etc.)?
Anything else I need to know before making a decision?

You could buy a site from the DP buy/sell/trade forums or build one yourself using CGIproxy or PHProxy, both free scripts.

Get a VPS or preferably a dedicated server.

Do a search for proxy on these forums, there are a few really good threads with tons of info.

Make sure your web hosting service provider is OK with it. Some will shut down your account.

Well, I'm not really looking for an established site. I've seen some decent sites for sale for $20. I just reached 64K friends on myspace and a proxy site will be a good place to earn money, since most people that use myspace are always using proxies in school, etc.

The only problem is that in my school, I cant access the proxy sites. Is there a way to avoid that. I'm still not clear on how proxies work. I've heard that setting this sites arent that complicated, so I will try to set it myself.

How many have you tried? The school must have blocked a bunch of them or have really good filters.

A Proxy is an agent. Basically, a proxy site allows people to access sites which they normally might not be able to access. How it does this is that when you request a URL, the proxy script would be the one to request the site and send you the details over the web. To the server you are accessing from, the proxy site is seen as the visitor in the log instead of you. Basically, it sort of allows you to hide your identity.

There are those web based proxys like those Proxy sites running the CGIProxy and PHProxy scripts.

Then there are those which are used by some ISPs, the main function may be to filter undesirable websites because the proxy server will match the list of site request to the banned list and accept or reject the request. The other function is that a proxy site can do page caching to speed up access to sites. For instance on a popular website, say 1000 persons visit it, only the first person who visits, the proxy server will check if it visited the site befre and if it does not, it would get to the actual site then the content is stored on the proxy server. The next person who access it, the proxy server basically checks if the updated content is on the server and if it is so, just shows the person that. So instead of having to make 1000 round trips to the site, it needs to make only 1, saving the web host tons of money in bandwidth overheads.

If you are running a proxy site, make sure your web host allows you to do so. Be prepared for high bandwidth charges because each time someone request a page, the proxy server will be receiving the content from the server and redirecting to the visitor. So technically, if the web page is 100k in size, the bandwidth usage would somewhat be 200kb, one time from the site and the next time to the visitor. Also the server needs to be able to fast as it needs to do a lot of processing and it will need to proxized all the links. Then because your IP address will be logged as visitors to the site, you need to entertain any law enforcement agency and cooperate with their investigations, if some of your visitors uses your service to access illegal contents or submit illegal contents through your proxy site.

    Have fun!

You can make your own proxy or look out for a good deal. I bought my proxy for $8 which included domain, temp hosting, proxy installed and listed at topsites. A little while later I got better hosting and templates. For advertising you could try proxy.org or get a google adwords voucher. If you need to know more in detail about anything just PM me. :)
