I was trying to build a web directory. I tried a lot of differnet CMS but none of them are that great, including php-nuke.

Does anyone have any suggestions? I want a clean interface with no clutter.

are you building a web directory using a CMS or trying to add articles feature to an existing directory?

if you're looking to build one, then there are many directory scripts out there, both free and paid, so you dont need a full blown cms for this purpose.

on the other hand, a cms like joomla/mambo offers addons using which you can build yourself a directory alongwith with a content driven site, but those addons do not provide you the functionality of a dedicated directory script.

A lot of people seem to like phplinks.

I use an older modified version of cncat.

You may wish to try site-sift listings directory. It is a great free script that makes seo pages. Download at http://scripts.site-sift.com/down.php
I am using it on 2 sites now and it works very well. I also made a mod for it to give a list of your links and to check and verify recip links that can be downloaded from the site sift forums or from my Market Place site.

Here is a list of free and commercial PHP scripts. I personally use phplinkdirectory because it has many advantages especially if you want to charge for listings. You can also see this thread for more scripts.
