just taking a poll for your thoughts about....

build a huge site that has loads of content where everyone can find what they are looking for...(well at least lots of assorted stuff)..and may well keep coming back as they know there's lots of stuff there.

break it up into lots of little 'niche like' sites.

I do both, but it realy depends on do all the 'subsections' fit into one site or not.

If you do it correctly you could have one main site with more information subsites going from different categories. Do it correctly and it gets you back links to both your main site, to your subsites, etc. Or allows you to build your main page up and feed your smaller subsites.

It almost always better to have more than one site. What if you have one big site and suddenly it drops in rankings, pr, or traffic? What if it gets penalized?

As long as you do it correctly so they can't all be linked together and get banned, penalized, etc I agree.

It's helping me out right now that my main domain has been hit a bit by google, my lesser sites are picking up some of the slack making my earnings much less, but much higher than it could have been had I only one site.

Personally, I'd have it sort of both ....

What I mean is one solid good keyword rich domain with good keyword file structure, but to keep it from getting too cumbersome and to better capitalize on other good keywords, I would create subdomains to diversify.

Yes, I agree. There needs to be a "both" option.

I have many sites, and I'm making a couple of them very big.

So my answer is: LOTS OF BIG SITES

That's true, but rather difficult to achieve usually.

I would also have to say both, you need a good mix, although it does depend on what your business is also.
