A Newbie Question Regarding Monetizing Blogs

Discussion in 'General Business' started by Mirage, Jul 6, 2006.

    Greetings All,

I am new to the online business and have zero experience with any of the internet marketting, affiliates, ebooks, etc. I am reading like mad and learning a lot.

In my continued quest for knowledge I have a question regarding blogs...

Is monetizing a blog pretty similar to monetizing a web site? That is, am I pretty much looking at AdSense type income plus whatever affiliate products I intersperse in the blog? Or is there some other standard technique used?

I am currently toying with a design and a content strategy, but I realized that I had better figure this aspect of it out as well before even thinking about taking it live.

Any advice or suggestions from the fine members of DP would be greatly appreciated.

    My Ten Simple Steps...

    by Me :)

    1) First of all, it's a blog, keep posting, adding content...

[some particular steps which will get more traffic and you'll see why you have to do this]

    2) start submitting your blog on different blog websites (I can suggest blogsrater.com, it has plenty of PR 5 pages and also, see the elephant list from pingoat.com)

    3) ping your blog to get different spiders on your blog (you can use pingoat.com or ipings.com)

    4) "scan" for blogs which are on the same topic, make comments there, and always submit your link in the URL field, you will get more credit

    5) You don't need to exchange links, use the trackback feature. Try googling for trackback and see what that means and how to use it.

[Why do you need to go through step 2-5 ?]

Because those will give to your blog more exposure. You need to inform search engines that your blog is important. Their job will be to tell to the people who are searching daily, the same thing. This will give you the traffic.

[Now that we have traffic let's monetise it]

    6) Add adsense [done!]

    7) create an amazon account if you can promote cheap products, it's easier to get a comission

    8) signup to clickbank and promote products as an affiliate

    9) when your blog grows, and people start to visit it big time, sell links (a good Page Rank will help you also)

    10) Enjoy blogging, and do it for pleasure and money also, but focus on pleasure because that's what you'll give to your visitors.

    Thanks for the info, Vladimir,

I can tell you that the blog I have in mind is truly for pleasure. It is something I've wanted to do for some time. The only difference is now I realize that there is a way to monetize it *if* it gets popular at all. Only time will tell.

    Thanks again.

    sethgodin.typepad.com/seths_blog/ and there...

    sethgodin.typepad.com/seths_blog/2006/06/how_to_get_traf.html (unfortunately I can't add live link here yet! :p )

    make proper, informative permalinks.

don't put tons of google ads to your blog, it just makes layout look awful and scares potential readers away.

    ---

about content: try to stick with your concept, don't expand blog into too wide range of topics, subjects.

I made this mistake with my first blog, after I split my blog to 3 smaller blogs, I started instantly gaining lot more traffic and subscribers,
since it was easier for people to understand what my blog(s) was/were all about.
