I have heard this puzzle before, but my little brother just asked this to me today, so i thought i would share.

    Here's the scenario:
Three friend go to a pub and have a few drinks. The total bill is $30, so everyone pools in $10 each and gives it to waiter.

Waiter goes to the manager and gives him the money, but the manager recognizes those three and asks waiter to give them $5 back as they're old customers and good friend. Waiter keeps $2 for himself and hands over $1 to everyone.

Look at this from this perspective:
So, now technically, everyone pooled in $10 and got $1 back, total share of each person is $9.

    Total share: 9*3 = $27
    Waiter took: $2
    Net amount: $29

    Where is that $1?????

Only think the way i explained it.

Don't use any paper to solve it, try to do this mentally.

"Think only the way it is represented" is the trick of this question. to solve it you have to go out of the box, ma'dear.

    now let me straighten't'up..
    Total share: 9X3=27 Right.
    Waiter Took 2 Right
    Net Amount: $29 Wrong

the money Waiter had taken is included in the 27 bux. so there is no $1 missing.
    its like this:
    Total share: 9X3=27
    Manager Got 25
    Waiter got 2
    Net Amount 25+2=27

    Solved......

Why you are still counting $30 ?

Total bill is now $25 and drunk friends paid $27 of which waiter slipped $2. :)

Well the real trick is looking at the situation the way i represented it. I cant seem to find the answer that way.

You can work this out otherwise with many different solutions.

Waiter goes to the manager and gives him the money, but the manager recognizes those three and asks waiter to give them $5 back as they're old customers and good friend. Waiter keeps $2 for himself and hands over $1 to everyone.

waiter took $2 and give $1 to everyone(means 1$ each person)

    $2 + ($1 * 3) = $5

    SOLVED

    There are no missing $1....
