I went to a really old thread: https://forums.digitalpoint.com/threads/nigritude-ultramarine.553/ and noticed that the majority of the people that contributed to that thread have not visited the forum for a few years. I went to a couple other old threads and it seems to me that the average longevity of a DP member is between 2 to 7 years.

Maybe I am just imagining that, but it seems like quite a few members quit logging in around Jun. of 2011. Did something happen around that time that caused some members to stop coming here? Or is it just a coincidence?

Yeah - spammy techniques came to the fore and the old school guys didn't want to play that way.

Now it makes sense. Thank you sarahk. I thought maybe there was some sort of a split or something. Didn't even cross my mind that it had something to do with spam.

that comp was fun and it did require a lot of link building and directory submissions but we got really creative with it - pretty much necessary when trying to make a page about nothing stand out. I think it opened people's eyes to how you could really blast a site out there and make a difference so it was possibly instrumental in souring people's attitudes too.

I was breathing some life back into an old directory and found a few links from that time - still alive and well. Needless to say dropped anyway.
