Aaaarrrggg, DVD writer refuses to write

Oh FFS, this is now starting to piss me off.

I'm using Nero Express 6.3.1.12. Basically, what happened was that I was burning data to a DVD, but forgot to add one or two files. Not wanting to wait for the stuff to burn, I cancelled the burning process (and was planning on using the now-wasted DVD as a coaster :D ) and got the next dvd ready. But wait. What's this? Nero says that it's cancelling the writing process, but the thing slowed down to a crawl and it looked like it was continuing the burning process. I got really impatient (due to lack of sleep) and as I couldnt close it down manually, I shut Nero down via Windows Task Manager.

Now the thing won't write anymore. Whenever I try to burn a disk, it gives me a generic error about not being able to burn the disk and then exits. Geez.

What other programs are there to burn stuff to dvd? Or, can anyone help me get Nero working again? (I've tried to reinstall it, doesn't work. Same for simply restarting the PC :( ) I've attached the error log

by closing it the way you did it could of damaged the dvd writer somehow.

have you checked in control pnael > system -> hardware -> Device manager to see if there is any driver issues.

I just checked the drivers, no conflicts. Im wanting to test the drive with other burning software to see it if the Dvd-Writer is damaged or if it's just Nero being stupid.

I wonder how it could be damaged. I mean, I can read from it perfectly. Do DVD-Writers use the same laser for reading an writing, or a different one? :/

i have no idea, you can try burn-4-free (http://www.burn4free.com/) its free and is gd for a free burner, only thing is it install an annoying toolbar i couldnt get rid of last time.

also is your nero version up 2 date, i know nero reminds me to update now & then cos its says its has conflict errors with win xp.

First I'd reboot, then if that didn't work I re-install Nero and if that doesn't work click here.

I would mention Blaze Media Pro for DVD burning, but in this case, I think you would not need it, unless you're interested in other features it also offers. As already mentioned, I bet the driver was just locked. If you reboot the system, that should be resolved. Good luck.

*sob* first thing i tried. No luck :( Tried reinstalling Nero. No luck :( Tried reinstalling drivers for the DVD-Writer. No luck :(

I wonder if the problem is occuring because some temp files weren't deleted, and when it tries to burn, it's finding those temp files and is being thrown into confusion?

Pity I don't know where Nero puts it's temp folders (and I've already tried clearing out all of the temp directories)

<edit>It was Nero being stupid. Burn4Free worked perfectly. Thanks, Just-For_teens (btw, the toolbar can be uninstalled by simply clicking on "search" and choosing "uninstall" :)</edit>

hehe no probs, nero can go like that some times, i always thought the nero temp files were either in C:/ (or wherever its installed) or in C:/Program Files/Ahead/Nero

If you are using XP I would try a system restore to the day before the problem first occured, reboot, uninsall Nero, reboot install Nero again.

IMO...when you forcefully exited out of Nero some files could have been corrupted either within the program itself, or outside of the program such as window reg settings, etc.

An uninstall will not fully cleanse the system of these problems, so when you reinstall they still persist. I personally would check Nero's site out for info on fully removing any trace of their software and reinstalling it, unless you're happy with the new software of course.
