From the experience I had with add placement, puting them within the content lines makes it stand out and ppl click them more often.

Adsense doesn't work on every website. like what was mentioned earlier I would remove the link bar and change the text ads to image only in the sidebar. Then place text ads within the articles. Try to invite your visitors to click on your information but provide them a way out through adsense.

An idea would be to add a little summary to each image on the home page. Then your visitors will know what information to expect by clicking on the image. At this point you can introduce more avenues of other resources (adsense). Now you have a visitor that has a targeted direction and therefore your chances of getting a click has increased.

But do not take my word as concrete. You need to experiment with different arrangements. Some times Text links do well other times its image ads. Personally the link bars have not been an option I like. I like 1 click and paid instead of 2 clicks and paid.

I would change link color in 160x600 to red color. I think this is a good color to get more attraction.
Not the url but first line of adds.

If I were you, I would place a leaderboard ad below the link unit on top.
