    Hi Folks,

Just thought I'd pass my story along. Hopefully, someone can use the info and not waste a year.

    The Back Story:
I wrote several ASP/.NET/PHP web applications for businesses. My idea was to give them away for free. They install the web apps on their intranets, use them, and I get the page impressions and clicks.

    Results:
    Time Elapsed: 1 Year
    Total downloads: 15k + -
    Total Page views 1,000,000 + -
    Total Clicks: about 100 + -
    Total Revenue: $35 (lol)

    The Mistake:
If an add is not on the Internet (like on an intranet or non-public internet sub domain), even if the ads appear the impression are counted, but you do NOT get page impression revenue. Even for the clicks. (Take this with a grain of salt. Obviously, at $35, I got some. But I suspect it's because some clients actually put them on the web for their remote/teleworking employees.)

    The Solution:
I put up the web apps as SaaS with their own domains. They are still free. Hopefully the impression and ad revenues would increase. It worked! (but don't shout eureka just yet).

    Time: 3 Months
Results: Increased by about 300% across the board, but obviously still chump change.

    The New Solution:
At registration time, I started collecting obvious stuff. Company Name, Location, Industry, etc. The app also collects new company user info like Role (Administrator or User), male/female, age, department, ... In short, I collect as much info that I can imagine. Surprisingly, almost every user fills it ALL out. :)

I created a simple database with the following structure:
    Table:
    - AdSenseFeeds

    Fields:
    - Industry
    - CompanyLocation
    - Department
    - UserAge
    - UserGender
    - UserRole
    - AdSenseContent
Some gender and age stereotyping is needed here. (Hey... it works.)
    Old Man=Retirement Income.
    Old lady=Knitting.
    Young Man=Singles/Automotive/Music.
    Young Chick=Singles/Makeup/Music.
Just kidding (not really!)... you know what I mean. :D
    - AdSenseTitle
    - Comment (for my own use about WTF I was thinking when I created the AdSenseContent.)

At run time (when a page loads)
(AdSenseTitle and AdSenseContent is in a collapsed outline at the bottom of the page.)
    - For the default page (no one is logged in) I load the default AdSenceTitle and AdSenceContent for that industry.

    - For internal pages, I load the AdSenseTitle and AdSenseContent that matches that user profile.
i.e location/gender/age/etc.. Administrators (from UserRole) are treated specially and are spoon fed relevant industry business AdSenseContent.

    - I contact businesses identified in the CompanyLocation and Industry and sell Ads top and center. (this is a *really* good one, but time consuming.)
    Time: 3 more months.
Results: Mostly the same. Except for the CTR. It's gone through the roof and finally have revenues of +-$100 per day. Still Chump Change but this is for my smallest app because this was a test. I have 4 more to do.

    ToDo:
    - I'm seriously thinking about creating a separate sub.sub.domain for every single user. Hey, hosting company said unlimited sub domains right? lol. In any case... I think I'll have to do this anyway.

    - Gonna start asking for more personal info like hobbies and interests.

Do you have a strategy to target users? I'd be grateful to hear about it.
