Good overview of the block and tackle on-site stuff, will there be more on link strategies in the upcoming sections?

    Dan,

    Here's some possible additions.

    1. In the PageRank section I would mention a judicious use of the nofollow tag on links to prevent dillution of pagerank. (Assuming pagerank is important to someone)

    2. Add keywords(when naturally applicable) to graphic alt text.

    3. Name graphics with keywords. (brings image traffic)

    4. Fresh content.

    5. Build an XML sitemap and upload to Google

All of the above have been useful in my SEO efforts.

I meant to say you can (and should) put a keyword or two in the page title (the TITLE element) if they are relevant to the page in question (like with my example, "Cubs" and "World Series" being two keyword examples), but I ran out of space tod o it because of the 20,000 character limit per post.

You know, I actually don't like using rel="nofollow" (as I said in the second post in this thread, if you use it, you might as well just have a text link). As long as you're not bleeding PR profusely, having an oubound link or two is fine.

I already said that, I just decided to put more emphasis on accessibility than SEO (this way your human visitors get the most benefit, and the search engines will still understand what the image is, especially if a keyword you're targeting is relevant to the image in question - see my example about "Jack Russell Terrier").

It'll only bring traffic if your visitors are conducting an image search. Since people tend to steal images outright, I actually block my images folder in my robots.txt file.

Served fresh daily (weekly at most, every 2-4 days is probably best). But again, I think I already touched upon that once or twice in the main post.

Unless the search engines are having great difficulty indexing your pages, this isn't necessary - and if they're having trouble indexing them, that's usually a sign you have much larger problems to deal with, so slapping a band-aid on a gaping wound isn't going to help your site's overall long-term health anyway.

I agree key words in the domain are even more crucial

A lot of people say that, but I just don't agree with it. What I think is happening is that people are choosing domain names that are easy to remember (and brandable), and that the search engines are just taking advantage of it. Yeah, there are times when other sites will use your domain name as keywords, and it's in those situations that I believe the search engines are picking them up as keywords (rather than a name that's easy to remember and brand).

This of course, is my own personal opinion.

so your belief is that" that's great Have you herd of Big Mike Murray from sempo, web pro and web tech he out lines these tactics with applause,"

there given to all that don't get the picture Big D," you see if you were a really hot and a well known seo like Mike Murray youre inclusions would be as powerful and very technical. Mike Murray is an Icon ! hes bad I gotta go with that tactic a broad.

Now Dan your on to something no one has ever done here on the forum and that's good for all I can see your work becoming a spectum like mikes you could be the next web pro seo! if you had a $10 million dollars" im kidding!

for all of the newbies online I think they need to know the bottom line," the bottom line is stay relevant to search and domain key words etc... one lesson for all every inquire you do should be very relevant to your niche! you domains, youre blog sub domains, your titles of your web sites, your description. you name it that's the key to successful marketing Thanks Dan"

If he's an icon, then why have I never heard of him? I've heard of Bill Murray (the actor) but not Mike Murray.

And as I've said before, I prefer brandable domain names, not stuffing them full of keywords. If they contain keywords (because they're relevant and can be branded) then so be it. It won't matter to me either way.

I agree. This should become a sticky. Thanks for this great informative article. It laid out the foundation for SEO'ers. I do admit that "search engine optimization should be done before you write one line of code" hit me head on. I do have a tendency to layout the structure before the content. 'Need to have more discipline to that.
