Am I A Mouth Breather?

Discussion in 'General Chat' started by Dio, Nov 22, 2005.

Without wanting to sound dense (but no doubt succeeding) - why is the phrase mouth breather used as a derogatory term? Don't we all breath through the mouth, and if my past education serves me right, the most efficent way to breath is to take a big mouth full quickly (no quips please) and then to exhale slowly through the nostrils or mouth (as sports people do?)

I tend to breathe in that manner as a going concern - it helps to get more oxygen to the head. What's more - more oxygen makes for clearer thought, so why is the term used to denote a lack of intelligence. What is it with calling people mouthbreathers and where did it come from? More importantly... Am I one? :D

You breathe through the nose mainly, unless you need more oxygen.

Mouth breathers usually have stinky breath, and make this "hooooo....haaaaa" sound when they breathe. Drooling can occur as well.

Yeah you're a dirty mouthbreather. There's a reason why mouthbreader and inbreeder rhyme.

Mouthbreathers piss me off with their loud mouthbreathing. I'm serious. My cousin used to be a mouthbreather and I wanted to just hit him in the mouth. I settled for yelling at him.

mouthbreathing is loud and annoying and normally mouthbreathers have stinky breath so you have to smell it everytime they breathe. When I see a mouthbreather it makes me think I'm looking at a person that hasn't evolved yet.

Hodgedup - thanks for the reds - your officially off the Christmas list and the invite to Mouth Breathers Ball is recalled. :D

So you guys seriously never use your mouths to breathe? What do you do when you have a cold? I'm sorry - I just get it as a derogatory term when its something I've seen athletes recommend and most people do.

SVZ - not quite sure what you're getting at there - how can that bloke mouthbreath when his teeth are so tightly clenched, a bit like some of the buttocks in this thread. :D

When jogging or other physical activity it's recommended to use that technique that athletes use.

However, in a relaxed state, it's normal to just breathe using your nose. If you have a cold and you're stuffed up then you're forced to use your mouth. I hate that cause I find the air constantly going in and out makes my mouth dry.

I hate when I see my boyfriend sitting here with his mouth hanging open for no apparent reason except breathing.

I tell him he looks like a retard. Really, if everyone were going around with mouths hanging open we'd all look retarded.

At a business meeting, do you see professionals sitting there with mouths hanging open?

LOL! but like Mella said, what's the diff what hole you use so long as you're breathing. I just don't like the open mouth method.

In my experience - nose breathers make some funny noises as the boogies on hairs flap like grungy windchimes. :D

It's nothing personal. I'd give anyone red if they admitted to being a mouthbreather. That's just a pet peeve of mine. I'm sure other then that you're a cool guy.

There's a reason why in normal situations people breathe through their nose besides just being less anoying.

Breathing through the nose warms and helps filter air.

I remember in high school we spent a day on talking about this in anatomy and physiology.

LOL - That's scary reading hodgedup - I am now set on training my nose to do the work. Seriously. And the fact that there was inbreeding in the family could point to more things than just the breathing, but that's another story. :D

My main concern now is can I change to a complete new breathing routine and finally be socially acceptable. Its a challenge. May be I should start a blog about the struggle. :)

LOL - Well, I've been nose breathing for 10 minutes now, and I'm feeling quite dizzy. If that's lack of oxygen or too much who cares, I've wired me jaw shut and are getting on with it... :D

I just always assume people that breathe through their mouth all the time have trouble with simple math.

Forget about the open-mouthed breathing I'm much more concerned about the open-mouthed eating. Profiteroles everywhere!

open mouth eaters don't bother me as much because they normally eat so fast that it's over in a few minutes.

I suppose it all depends on whether you're in range.

I wonder if Dio has recovered from his dizziness.
