I'm getting ready to upgrade my pc and I'm going to be moving up from my Athlon 2800 to an Athlon64 3200 and was curious if anyone else has any experience with these cpu's and whether or not anyone is using Windows XP 64?

Yes, I have one, I really love the safety features and speed of the 3200, My fan stopped working (loose cabel) and the computer shut off and refused to turn on for more than a half a second. I opened the case, recconected the fan, and bingo, all was fine. I really personally apreciate things like that. Great speed too, way faster than my P4.

Another vote for AMD64 - way better than Intel for games. I have duel boot of XP Pro and XP 64bit and the load time is night and day. The 64bit edition loads in about 5 seconds - no joke:eek:

I run lots of dual opteron Dell DL145 servers at work, they have proven just as stable as our intel servers and easily outperform them (running 64bit linux).

I think the Athlon64 3200 is so much better than the Athlon 2800, you made a wise decision.. Although obviously the Athlon 7000 is the ultimate beast of a machine that hardcore fuddamuckers use. I haven't personally tried windows XP 64, as I am currently using Windows XXL 65.

Cool beans, thanks for the intel (pun intended) :)

I'll head out tomorrow and get the components to make it happen. AMD all they way!!!

    I have 64 bit AMD - the 3000+.

I have windows XP 64 bit.

My opinion on the CPU - get the 3000, not the 3200. It is cheaper, and they are identical. I have tortured this thing with 15% overclock (most people double that at least, if they are overclocking). I have it running slightly higher than stock at 1920Mhz or so.

The thing is, is that you would probably never be able to tell any difference between a 3200 and a 3000, and I just checked prices here, it is $50 CAN cheaper - 159 vs 207 for the 3200.

My system is so cool, with the stock fan and heatsink, that the auto (Q-fan, for 'quiet) fan control usually does not even have my CPU fan running.
In other words, I could run this without a fan and it would not overheat (unless I started running a bunch of CPU intensive programs)

No, way, I am asamant about the 3000 vs 3200. I belong to the AMD64 forum ( PlanetAMD )and the forums and reviewes at NCIX almost to a person, say the same.

For 50 bucks, you can get RAM, and that will make 10 times as much difference for performance than a 3200 ~ 2000Mhz. The 3000 is 1800Mhz, but everything is almost instant no matter what I do, there is no way in the world I could tell the difference if a 3200 was in here. (I have 2 gig corsair twinx RAM, that gives me room)

I have even switched my RAM out to value ram, 512 Mb, and I couldn't tell from my high performance stuff, untill I run Dreamweaver and Photoshop and Outlook and more stuff.

actually, here is a review comparing a bunch of processors:
    AMD Athlon 64

This is another word on these processors:
3000 - save your money! We gonna get Dual Cores next time!

Windows 64 - I wish I hadn't bought it. It is almost the exact same to run as normal XP, butit is harder to get drivers (not really a problem, though) I think it would be better to wait for 'Vista' to buy a 64bit Windows OS.

Last word (LOL), it looks like AMD is equal, if not way better in almost every test compared to Intell.

Big thing to consider! AMD motherboards that run the 64 bit athlons will take FX and dual core, so can upgrade without bying a new motherboard.
I do not think this is the case with intel

I've got a boxed AMD64 running RHEL 4 64bit and some 32bit binaries. Kudos to AMD for 32/64bit compatibility. Very happy with its performance.

Awesome post and information MikMik - if I hadn't wasted all of my rep today throwing reds at Minstrel, I'd show ya some love for that beauty :)

My computer recently tanked and I had to buy a new one.

I've been wanting an AMD64 for a while, I just didn't want to be forced into the purchase, but when the motherboard fries, Rob buys ...

    Anyway, I LOVE this machine.

AMD64 bit, 2000Mhz FSB, and with 1GB RAM - it was like getting off a ten-speed and jumping on a Harley :)

More important then the CPU is the motherboard's chipset and how the bus is implemented. A poorly, pronounced cheap, designed MoBo can be a huge waste of money and not expolit the capabilities of a great processor.

Very true ;) Always a good idea to find some reviews and benchmark results before buying a mobo, especially if performance/stability is a factor in your decision.
