I'm tell you now, anime is a hard thing to target. You need huge servers for downloading or streaming episodes of anime on your website. www.narutofan.com is one of the biggest Naruto Fan websites and they haven't gotten into any copyright troubles that I know of.

Anime is tough to penetrate sometimes but if you get a lot of fans on your one site, they won't leave.

Well, it's a difficult market. You would really need to give out high quality videos or manga scans if you want to do well. A lot of people have just decided to go to youtube to watch anime fansubs, so you would need to find a good quality source for people to either watch or download. On the other hand, I guess you could just organize and embed Youtube videos. The money for you might come if you can find a few interesting ebay auctions. Anime items are really big on ebay right now. You'll have to personally select and monitor the items though.

    Copyright

You should have no real problems concerning copyright. You are violating their copyright on the episodes, but they understand that they can't bite the hand that feeds them. Naruto fansites were the main means of spreading the show to America. In general, fansubs and fan sites are what organize the buzz surrounding anime shows and mangas. I've never heard of them going after a site, because they depend on this as the best form of free marketing. Once they show becomes popular on the internet, they can cut a deal for an official dub and then sell it to a real station. So in short, you shouldn't have any real issues. But you will need one good server to handle it.

Very niche and will require a fair amount of advertising to come up with your own community of return visitors, also I have heard that new legal issues will soon be arising for anime

Narutofan is a paid site. You pay for their downloads. The reason they havent gotten into trouble with copyrights is

    A. Tazmo is canadian, meaning US laws don't apply, including the copyrights
    B. They name it as "charging for the bandwidth/highspeed downloads"

Putting up anime if you are in America could be bad. What I do (or will do since i just got my site set up) is use MegaUpload links to videos. Megaupload has high speed downloads and is free (unless you want to buy a pass, but thats totally up to you) If you need any help, let me know. I can help you find new content, and tell you where/what you need to do (for a small fee of course) lol

EDit: I forgot to add, if you plan on hosting directly on your server (which is awesome, still risky) you should get a WHOOOOOOLE lot of bandwidth or invest in a converter that converts from .mpeg, .mkv, .avi -> .rmvb (the files are half the size and retain most of teh quality)
