    1. You can use this to get the word out about what you offer. The trick is to make sure your press release covers what value you provide, rather than what you want customers to do. In other words, a press release that says, "New store online, come check it out" will fail. There are a million stores, and just because you want customers doesn't mean they're interested. But a press release that says, "Sick patient says 50% discount on medications kept him from going bankrupt" may in fact get some readership -- now people are interested in what the 50% discount will do for them.

    2. You review your sites, services, products, and features. You select the items that are most complementary and most useful to the end-customer. You write up a press release explaining how those things are useful to people. Find a personal story or some other angle to really enhance it. Then submit the press release to everyone who may be interested, or use a service to submit it.

    3. In my experience, it gives a little extra traffic, but not much -- even if you get the press release in Google News. The only way to get big traffic out of it is if the press release is picked up by industry publications and media outlets. That's hard -- there has to be a human interest story in there, or some reason (other than your own stuff) for it to be covered.

This is why, for example, a site like monster.com will put out a press release about the "average salary for 2006" or "job satisfaction plummets" or such. They really just want everyone to use monster.com, but to get people to think about monster.com, they have to give a reason, so they talk about salaries or job satisfaction or whatever. Then media will cover those statistics, and say in a fast quiet voice "numbers provided by monster.com."
