Any doctors or nurses out there?

    I need some advice.

We just got back from having dinner at a local resteraunt. My husband and I ordered hard ice cream for dessert. My two year old daughter had soft serve. Now usually she eats ice cream really well, but this time she took a couple of bites and then didn't want it any more.

So I took a bite. I figured why let ice cream go to waste. That is when I realized that it tasted funny. My husband tried it to and agreed with me.

We told the waitress and she had the manager check the machine and they came back and told us that the ice cream had gone bad and that they shut down the machine.

Needless to say, they were not helpfull at all and we had to ask for them to take it off the bill. I honestly thought they would volunteer that at least.

My problem is that I am a nervous wreck now. Is it possible for bad soft serve ice cream to cause food poisoning or something like that.

I tried to call the ask a nurse phone line but they don't service my state. And because it is sunday night i can't get ahold of anyone.

I don't know if this is nothing or if it is something I should be worried about.

To make it worse, we are supposed to be leaving for vacation tomorrow morning at 7:00 AM.

If there is anyone out there who can tell me if this is something that could be a problem or if I am just making this a bigger deal than it really is, then I would greatly appreciate it.

At this point my husband and I are talking about not leaving for vacation until we see what happens over the next few days.

I'm not a doctor, but it is possible to get a few types of food poisoning from soft serve ice cream, namely Listeria and Salmonella. Watch for any signs of her being sick. I'm not one to normally run to a doctor, but with an infant I'd say it might be a good idea to take her just to be on the safe side.

Foods can taste bad and not be contaminated. Listeria is a bacteria that can live in very cold temperatures and people have gotten Salmonella from soft serve ice cream as well.

I've included some links for you. They're from all over. I just did a quick search.

My wife is a nurse and this is not to be substituted for medical advice, but worst case for bad milk will be a belly ache and diarrhea.

It won't be a problem, as Noppid said...belly ache or diarrhea will be the worst that will happen.
I have owned a Baskin Robbins ice cream store for 11 years and no one has ever complained about getting sick from soft serve, if it tastes funny it's usually because of two much additive to the flavour.

Hope this eases your concerns a little....don't worry and have a good vacation.

I must say, DP is the best. I feel much better now after talking to you guys. We are still going to delay out trip a day to make sure we are not traveling when she needs a potty on short notice, but at least I will be able to sleep tonight.

Don't delay your trip, I don't mean to sound patronising but your going to feel down when you get up in the morning and she is her usual bubbly self.

I have three children and a big thing I have learnt is to not be over protective.

Yeah if she's not showing any symptoms at all then you don't have anything to worry about. Just go and have fun.

I'm not a doctor, but I've eaten crappy soft serve before having worked at a place that sells it. Now I don't know how bad their ice cream got, but from my experience it happened just from the machine being accidentally not plugged in for a few hours during a slow period. We had to clean the machines out every night, because that's the law here in CA (hopefully that's the case where you live). Upset stomach was all I got.

Thanks for the advice but I didn't want to be on the road if she was having diarrhea. She is potty trained, no diapers for almost a year now. If she still wore diapers then I wouldn't be as worried but if it was a bad case and she couldn't hold it till we found a bathroom then that would be a mess to clean up.

We will enjoy our vacation. We will most likely leave tonight instead and still have a great time.

Thanks so much for everyone who answered this post.

    Yeah I guess so.

I worked in Pazza Express for a year once...

I wasn't sick of the food, but I sure did have to mix it up in order to stay interested...

(FYI - SLoppy Guissepe with a cracked egg in the middle, covered with the PizzaExpress salad dressing is gooooooooood)

When I was in High school I worked for Chick-Fil-A. I stayed there for a few years because the food was so good! I still love going there to eat... Like SEbasic said though you have to mix it up.

You would think so but I go to the store three or four times a week and usually have an ice cream while I am there.
The thing about Baskin Robbins is that we have 32 Flavours at any one time plus a flavour bank of over 700 so there is always something different to try.

And before anyone asks, yes I am still the same weight now as when I was when I first opened the store......perhaps the Triathlon training has something to do with that ;)

PS: I am now trying to see if this thread can outrank Baskin Robbins in the SERPS, particually the Australian website.

So the Ice Cream at Baskin Robbins is good?

I don't know if we have a Baskin Robbins here to be honest. But I like Ice Cream. :)

My mother in law owns 2 ColdStone's and is opening a third. Thank goodness she lives a couple of hours away because I am by no means a triathlete in training. There's no way I could own an ice cream store and not look like a freshman living in the dorms at the end of the year again.
