    Skype is great. Though to use it for free - the other party has to have it as well.

    Yahoo Messenger is decent as well.

    While I could be wrong, I would imagine there are voice mail services you could use... start up a trial. Get what you need then cancel it. Or keep it if you intend to do a lot of business that requires phone verification.
