phpBB3 is not in Beta, and hasn't been for quite some time now. It is currently on release candidate 4 or 5 by now. I use it at College Reviews, and it is actually better than vBulletin now.

I would not agree to the "actually better than vbulletin " part.
The good part in phpbb3 is that it is now more modern , phpbb2 hardly was a new world forum software , mostly working on mods while vb and IPB had those as feature sets .
also the default look and feel is better now .

You would not agree to it being better than vBulletin? Why? It has all the features, and it is free. I can't see why anybody would want to pay for vBulletin, unless you run ICOcontent on your forums.

I am trying one but haven't done much yet as it is experimental but so far the system is a heck of alot better than the version 2 ! At least this one you can find the members to delete the SPAMMERS instaed of running a mod! So I have to say that I like it so far but NOTHING beats a VB!!

You can see my site at www.webmasterforum.bz

We're running it on one of our scripts and it is an immense improvement over phpbb2 - i'd also go so far to say its better than vB - the only thing its lacking is the widespread modding/skinning from the community that phpbb2 had and vB has; but that'll come once its released fully - and when you consider its free you really can't compare the two.

SMF is good if you don't want too much spam, vb is good for large communities, phpbb is good for smaller communities.

On what basis do you say that phpBB is good for smaller communities? Is good enough for any size now.

The new version of phpBB can compare to all the paid forum software out nowadays and in some ways may even be better. The only thing lacking at the moment as previously stated is the large community of which phpBB 2 used to have. Once that comes about then it's gonna fully kick some a$$.

Besides that, i've been using it for a few months, not exactly fascinated by the default style. The administration interface is far superior compared to the older one aswell.

(no link need because I use detault style =P)

I would say that phpBB 2 would be up for anything but the thing is that you have to Mod it to death to get the features that you want but what the heck, its Free!!

The 3 Beta BB is pretty nice though I have to admit!

SMF is slow loading to me!!
