Anyone know about Melbourne IT?

Do any of you guys have a domain through Melbourne IT? They are supposed to be the largest seller of domains in Australia, and yahoo web hosting uses them for their domain names.

If so, then I have a question of how I can 301 redirect a .com site I own to a .biz site I have now. If anyone can help I would definately appreciate it, and for sure add to your rep!!!!!!

I can't figure out how to do this in their domain management page, and I can't get support from them.

I have not used them but one way that you can do is for the DNS Zone Information for the .COM , you set both the xxx.com and www version of the domain names to CNAME and point that to your .biz name.

CNAME or Canonical Name is a type of DNS Record which is an Alias of an established domain name.

    If you set the following

    xxx.biz > xxx.com > CNAME

it means that if anyone who types in http://xxx.biz will be shown the content of http://xxx.com .

Actually the easier way to establish what you want is in your web hosting control panel, add a PARKED DOMAIN for the xxx.biz in the xxx.com account. Then set up the xxx.biz DNS Zone as you did with the xxx.com and both will points to the same content.

I would use MyDomain.com's free DNS service that allows easy setup for domain forwarding. There you can point your .com to the .biz site without getting too deep into DNS stuff.

    1. Free signup with MyDomain.com
    2. Add your .com domain name to the control panel
    3. Set your .com domain's nameservers to NS1. NS2. NS3 and NS4.MYDOMAIN.COM
    4. Use the MyDomain forwarding instructions to get your domain redirection set up.

    Should be easy.

MelbourneIT are well known for their "interesting" tactics in relation to domains here in Australia.. If you search you will find they have had number of "little chats" with the the governing bodies.

Not to mention they are FUC^*#G expensive... $140 for 2 years... who would pay that..

where is your .biz site hosted ? can you manage it ? if so just ad it to your existing account (add-on domain) and re-delegate in the Melbourne IT CP.

Thanks for the input on them. What happened is I purchased web hosting through yahoo. Yahoo buys all their domain names through Melbourne IT, so yahoo is the reseller. Yahoo released my domain, so now I basically have to deal with Melbourne IT since they are the register. (i never new this untill yahoo released my site)

Their freaking management screen offers nothing. I can build site but I cant figure out how to point my site with them to my new .biz which I have through yahoo web hosting. I feel like an idiot. There is nowhere on their site I can redirect.... wtf?

I had to setup someones website who purchased their domain through Melbourne IT, I've never had to much troubles and stress.

I ended up just buying the person a .com version of their .com.au domain and said "Ask them to 301 redirect the the domain to xxxx.com, and it will be done."

How long did it take them to grant your request? I emailed them last week and I still haven’t gotten a reply.

I had to handle some business with Melbourne IT for a client of mine. To get anything done, we where required to fax them our requests... they wouldn't handle them any other way, which was a real pain in the ass to say the least.

I'd say there are other domain registrars these days that give more flexibility for managing your domain names.
Melbourne IT needs an upgrade to their services I think.

Yeap, to each it's own. One sucky company doing business with another. That about sums it up with that partnership.

Amen! To be such a large and well-known company, with high prices you would think their customer service would be at least mediocre.
