I hold a 1st dan black belt in Tae Kwon Do. When I was still in TKD (when I was 8), I was the Western Canadian champion for my age group for 2 years consecutive (then I shattered my right rib cage trying to defend my title on the 3rd year...that was the end of my martial arts for a while.).

I studied Muay Thai Kickboxing for 2 years.

I studied Shaolin Temple Boxing, Wing Chun, and 7 Star Preying Mantis kung fu styles throughout the years.

For the last 7 years I have learned under a tai chi master. He's taught me a form of Preying Mantis Tai Chi, very kickass stuff :)

I used to practice Karate, but an ankle injury ruled me out twice for so long that I never picked it up again since the last incident.

I learned a lot, not only phisically but also mentally.

    Too bad.

    Thanks for the advice!

I was looking at aikido actually, but that was a couple of years ago, before starting my life of travelling.

I am not in the same place for more than a few weeks and that makes joining any sports group, whether a gym or whatever, practically impossible.

I actually need to practice more sports as I am approaching my wedding and at least then I want to be in good shape.

I should prob loose 5 kg and replace fat with some muscle.

But most of all martial arts proved to be a great stress relief, and there was much more on the philosophical side...

I only play soccer/football now and then when I have a chance, not much else...:)

Maybe one day I'll try aikido which is something I regret not having tried at all.

What do you call the martial art of getting drunk and beating the shit out of homeless people, kids and little helpless, sick puppies?

Isn't Thai-boxing and Muay Thai the same?

I'm thinking of doing something similar regarding martial arts but in my oppinion more effective such as krav maga and actual hand to hand military style mortal combat techniques.

Most martial art are maybe fun to practice and looks fancy but when it comes down to it it's useless in my oppinion. All those high kicks and stuff, worthless if you ask me.

Fighting out in the real world and out of the dojo or a contest is different when it comes to actual fighting.

Some do it for fun and other's do it to be prepared.
