Regardless of what machine is used. OS X is BSD kernel based (The MACH Kernel) thus all hardware is supported :) making it so that their OS runs on an intel chip will allow the OS to be installed on ANY machine that uses intel cpu's :)

The MAC processor is the supiror CPU however they seem to be having trouble getting better speeds to happen with it. I think this might be part of the reason they are deciding to port over to intel :)

    Sorry man :D

BSD is a form of UNIX... UNIX has been around since the 60s and is completely based off of the C programming language making it a very stable operating system.

Anyway LINUX and BSD are varients of UNIX.

The HARDWARE support in UNIX/BSD/Linux is incredible. You have hundreds of thousands of developers working around the world on their free time to create hardware drivers and such for these OS's

So if MAC decides to make their OS run on an intel CPU it will be awesome because they use a BSD back end to their operating system which has support for all the hardware you could ask for.

The point being you will eb able to install MAC OS X on any computer out there if they go ahead with the intel plan.

    Hope that helps.

Not really... Apple is not going to be making "normal" x86 machines. Apple hardware is going to use Intel processors... that's really all that's changing. Mac OS X is *not* going to run on a x86 machine that can run Windows. Apple is still mostly a hardware company, so their main income is from hardware.

Maybe someday it will happen, but not anytime soon.

Think of it like how an Xbox is really a computer running Intel processors (Pentium 3 specifically), that doesn't mean you can run Windows on an Xbox. Sort of the same idea.

Hmmmm ok well as far as I understood if they will allow their OS Kernel to interface with an intel based CPU you should be able to run it on any intel based machine no?

I guess if they limit hardware support in their version of the MACH kernel they could force it to be used only with their hardware but couldnt someone just patch the kernel with all the hardware support they would need?

[friendly hijack]I have a few questions re: Macs in my latest blog entry... Anyone want to have a stab at them?[/friendly hijack]

[OT]I read yesterday how working with Jobbs in a joint development/venture can be a nightmare. At least that's what Sony found. I hope he has better relationships with the Intel folk. Still love to see Apple with Soney kick some iMovies ass one way or the other. Together they can really push HD TV IMO.[/OT]

Nope, not necessarily... especially since Apple is *not* adopting the x86 hardware architecture, it's nothing more than Intel CPUs. You would have a better chance running Windows on an Xbox machine.

Yes, in theory if they open sourced the whole operating system, it could be done relatively easily, but they aren't going to do that. Apple isn't stupid... they make most their money on hardware. I also don't expect the new Apple machines running Intel processors to be able to run Windows either.

Do you remmebr the PC cards that people were selling to run window on MAC. I don't think the task will be that difficult, if there is a will, there is a way and if there is money in it, there is a will. ;)

Yep... but there is no money in it these days. No one wants to buy a Mac (which is more expensive than a Windows machine) just to run Windows on it. :)

That's like buying a Ferrari and slapping a Yugo engine into it.
