Are Members On Digital Point Just Aiming For Likes?

Discussion in 'General Chat' started by wonay, Feb 23, 2013.

    Dear Fellow Members,
I was quite fascinated with the new look of Digital Point when I saw it for the first time.

I find most of the changes pretty worthwhile and effective for members and mods alike. However, I find the "Like" system the most intriguing of all.

I have noticed that many members (noticed more than 25 at least) have changed their profile picture to a girl's photo. And, the new members who I have noticed already have a girl's photo as their avatar to start with.

What amuses me more is the fact that most of these members seems to be getting "Likes" for doing nothing special at all. All they really seem to be doing is posting a simple reply to a thread (which took the thread poster loads of effort to write) and they are the ones getting the likes instead of the thread starter.

I am an online business owner who has written tons of original articles that have been read by millions of people over the last 12 years. But yet, I am still to receive a "like" for the 4 original articles I wrote on pretty helpful topics.

Maybe I am just jealous of those members who get "likes' for no real efforts put in or maybe I am getting too old for a place like this. But, I certainly think something's going wrong. And, if my instincts are as strong as it always has been then this forum will be losing loyal visitors over the next few months.

    Now, my questions are this....

Are forum members becoming so biased that they cannot see beyond a person's Avatar??

Will people (like me) continue posting new and unique threads when they know that nobody but the people replying are going to get the likes.

Please think about what I have written for a moment before you push the reply button and give me your replies.

very well said and it's not about avatar people create account with a username which contains girls name (English girl name by people of India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and many other countries that we can't imagine) and set their location to USA :p thanks God premium members can view original GEO location.. I am very curious to know how your username, avatar and location will become more helpful then your knowledge and skills to get more business here

Actually "Digital Point" was most famous due to it's Huge Market Place arena for lots of webmaster from last few months. There are lots webmastes made an account just to make some money easily. I never told that they are all fraud, but maximum (near about 80%) webmasters worked as a Broker and due to this reason, DP lost their popularity too.

I think the new rule of this forum, specially "like" system had been created by owners to accept only real and authentic members (without pay) into this forum. Even that's why they used "Avatar" profile.

But I think they forget that "every house has a back door" and people can entrance into the room from there also.

According to me, the another way to eliminate such kind of fraud people from here, must use the member verification through either Pan Card, Passport etc... I know there will be also "Back Door" but in this way many more real people will get chance at here and also it will help to protect duplicate ID for one member.

That was as well the first thing I noticed after signing up today, also when browsing through the forums, I noticed a lot of threads (starter post) with worthwhile content that received no likes at all.

It almost seems impossible to go the non-paying way to get an established member (after the design change) without paying for Premium Member, I for myself was looking forward to post in the Marketplace (to buy something which would benefit other members).

Maybe it's just that most of the people didn't really notice about the like function yet, but in my opinion this is a function that more belongs into other kinds of forums (and not in the for the most part Business forum), or they shouldn't be made necessary to use certain functions of this forum. This leads only to the observed behavior of this "like-whoring".

Just to clear this up, is there any other way than getting likes (or paying) to get established here ? Because I see that the majority of the users, where most of them have a lot of posts (I didn't check them all for quality of posts) didn't even receive a single like. So how would one new member get established at all ?

I've been a member here since 2005 ... yes that's 8 years now.. and not that much has changed really.. few good people lost, few gained but the majority seem to be here for nothing but self promotion whether it's services, web hits etc etc

Still a few good people about though so not all is lost. Personally I don't post very much (700 posts in 8 years) and I would guess < 10 posts were me selling something so least I'm still here to try and help :)

Getting noticed and likes (I know nothing about likes as I could not be bothered to read the new forum rules / stuff .. sorry DP) it will all come in time, keep on posting the good stuff there will be someone who likes it

I am sure because "likes" here are a new thing, it will die down soon, but you're probably right that some members are aiming for that. Maybe they have personal issues and it feels better to be liked, no idea. I didn't notice this thing about the girls avatars though. I did notice two new male models discussing love, I found that pretty interesting. (meaning, their avatars obviously are not really pictures of them)

OMG Is that the reason nobody likes my stuff, because I used a real picture?

I knew I should have stolen a picture of someone prettier and skinnier than me to play me in these forums.

It's not impossible as you think and here we are taking about Thread Op who contribute useful content and didn't get like but some people get like because of their avatar only that's not fair and many established people (they all are in engaged in this thread directly or by liking post) and many more always give like for useful content if we are not doing so then how this thread OP become established?? you can ask him directly if he is not receiving like for useful content. The small hard work you need to do to become established. (2 Post will not give you 3 Likes)

    "digitalpoint likes this" :p
Now you don't need to change picture..lolz also now I m getting why Shawn had changed his profile picture...of course to get more like...lolz

I had been in contact with this forum a few years ago. It seems to me that the experiment which "likes" will show in near future if it bring or not the tangible benefits. On the one hand, some can count on easy to get like, on the other hand, this should motivate users to write valuable content.

DP can always prohibit using in the avatar sexy girls :)

It's getting old with these "likes" threads. I'd like for shawn to outlaw "likes" threads. Heck, I'd "like" that thread.

    I like coffee.

The new system has been in place for a pretty long time now, can't these threads just stop. Haha.

This post talks more about quality of the content being posted VS just having an attractive female as an avatar. Whether the "LIKE" system was in place way back in 2006 or before I don't know, but what I know is that right now it is being promoted more than it was back then. I would request the MODs to lock this thread or shift it elsewhere where it gets "less" attention if it affects older (and highly knowledgeable) members so much.

No you can't do that now...

Besides...what is wrong with something nice looking to the left of the writing...every time I finish reading a line I start a new line from the left side where I am greeted by something pleasant to look at. :) I don't see the problem.
